I took my dog for a walk round town just to make sure he keeps up to date with being comfortable around cars and lorries and to do a bit of training in the park where there are "distractions". On the way we walked along the river and he was pulling my arm off, he comes back to heal if I point out that I'm "back here" but soon forgets again. He got better as the walk went on and was quite good on the way back, its exhausting though! We don't have any classes this week as all trainers are on holiday so I'm trying to do stuff myself, today he has decided that sitting straight in "front" position is something that is completely alien and he has no concept of what I'm asking...... sigh!

Hmm! It’s interesting what they ‘forgot’. Ernie has recently taken to completely ignoring my requests for him to get in the car. Even when he knows we’re going to the beach. He looks at me like he has no idea what I am asking.

The first lady we went to dog training with always used to make that point about reinforcing the training in different places because dogs learn to associate the place with the training. So for example if you always practised sit and stay at home in the living room, the dog might not understand if you then asked for the same in the kitchen. This was always critical for us because when we were having our Bronze and Silver GC classes we were in our local village hall but the tests were always held at the hall a couple of villages away. We all had to go there and practice the week before the test in case our dogs looked at us and said 'what do you mean down? I have no idea what you are talking about' :-)

Our teacher's analogy was that if dogs could learn to drive, if they passed their driving test in Ipswich they would have no idea what to do if they then had to drive in Colchester...... although actually, that's how I am anyway - Colchester is a horrible place to drive around and even has roundabouts that you have to go the wrong way round!

I am so glad Jess can't learn to drive. There would be the most appalling example of road rage when she spotted a cat motoring an adjacent vehicle.

Thank goodness they can't fly aeroplanes either - Wanda would be deploying the machine guns as in some sort of James Bond scene every time she saw a bird.......

Rory’s gundog trainer says you have to work on Distractions, Duration and something else beginning with D that’s to do with where you are...Department?? Possibly it doesn’t even begin with D, I’ve just decided it does in my head. Poor Rory, held back by his stupid owner who can’t even listen to instructions properly!

Destination sounds more likely.

Duck would definitely come under ‘Distractions’...

Duck, a bird that swims in water - definitely distracting to self-respecting dog :-)
Duck, someone is shooting over your head- worth remembering? :-)

Destination sounds more likely.
