Message from son1 tonight: they are to view their Australian Labradoodle puppy (born yesterday) in September, and bring her home on October 6th I hadn't realised until I read the 'History' tab on the breeder's website, about the 'Australian' aspect. The breed came about when a blind woman from Hawaii asked the Australian Guide Dog Association asked for a minimally allergenic guide dog, which they couldn't supply, so they started on the cross-breeding trail between Labs and poodles.
I'm excited for son1 and his partner but also, and I know this sounds ridiculous, a bit like I think I'd feel if they'd announced a baby was on the way. (Highly unlikely for this particular gay couple ;-)). I feel a bit anxious about how it'll all work out, which is very silly because they are two sensible and level-headed people!

Not ridiculous at all Daisy - the puppy is an addition to their small family and life will never be quite the same...

Getting a puppy is exactly like having a baby. It's exciting yet terrifying. You read all the books. You buy all the gear. Then you get them home and it turns out they haven't read the books and you get by on a wing and a prayer. Oh and they would rather play with the packaging than any of the toys you've bought.

Apparently, because of the very strict rules in Australia which more or less ban the import of anything living (I paraphrase) the *export* of animals from there are guaranteed disease free so wouldn't have to go through the lengthy quarantine period coming in to Hawaii. 'They can start work straight off the plane' it said on the website. (I assume she'd already asked the US Guide Dogs people and they'd said they couldn't help.)
