I reread all the Culture novels in order before this one. Still have a couple of non-Culture ones that I'll reread next plus a couple of non-M ones as well. I guess we're lucky that he wrote quite a lot :-)

I did - It was the rather disappointing Hydrogen Sonata I held off on. But I've read that now. The previous book, Surface Detail provides much more 'closure' for the Culture stories.

I finished The Hydrogen Sonata yesterday so I'm feeling slightly sad today. It was a good book, but not one of my absolute favourites. It probably wasn't intentional but I thought it was fitting that the last ever Culture novel should have Subliming a one of its plot points.

It had the normal Culture themes - sarky Avatars, bickering Ships and wonderful descriptions of big scale action. I love how I can really almost see what he's describing which isn't something most authors manage. I also love the science explanations, it may all be complete hogwash but he makes it sound believable

Finally I want to applaud the reveal of the full name of the Mistake Not... It really made me smile in a slightly tearful way as we won't have any more of these.

Anyway, I'm going to tip my cup of herbal tea to Iain M Banks tonight. Thank you for all the wonderful stories :-)

Haven't read that for a while. Might give it another go when I finish rereading something else, not Banks.

Aw. I am raising my decaf Earl Grey. I am lucky in that I still have a lot of Culture novels to read.
