I include my Sunday afternoon walk with Mr Ness now. It gets me a couple of extra squares. ;)

Indeed, walkers are rather hard done by in this system.

I include my walk from the station home, when I remember - it's 2 miles and takes a bit longer than running it would. WSW gives fewer points for walking on the squares.

Exactly. As JCB points out, why should something that takes longer get fewer points?

Presumably on the basis that there is less effort/exertion involved in walking than running?

Possibly walking is one point to stop the case where someone might log a very short walk, move to a different square via vehicle, etc, then log another short walk, etc. However, although more complex, it might be more equitable to score longer walks (over 0.5mi perhaps), with 4 points per square (or double for 'first') similar to swimming. Though it would be honour system for people to not log runs as walks (some threshold pace could be used as a check I suppose), but that's the same as bike/run.

Perhaps there could be different scores for a 'short' activity in general. Maybe not even distance, but if it's only in one square than it is deemed a short activity (call it blip/dot/bounded/island/isolated maybe).

I did some research at one point when thinking about walk/run difference and if we're talking about calories then from memory, it's pretty similar comparing running and walking for the same distance. Though time-wise it takes longer to walk the same distance.

Ideas anyone?

If people are logging a walk to the shops, putting the bins out, mowing the lawn... I think the current scoring is fair.

JCB is correct. Walking and running require the same effort distance for distance. Logging while mowing the lawn is only going to be one square whatever happens. As I will have already run, walked or cycled that square it’s not going to change the scoring, is it?

I agree with@StuH. I think if people are running to the shops, putting the bins out, and running mowing the lawn they should earn the same points as walkers doing the same activity. :) Walking isn't an inferior activity. Its an activity (though some people can look rather silly at it.
In this part of the world we have a 76 year old - Brian Glover - does every marathon (14 this year I think, but don't quote me) at very nearly the same pace - 5 hrs 30 - 5 hrs 35 for the 42 kilometers. I say again, aged 76.
How does he do it: he walks them. I think if Brian could be persuaded to compete in WSW he would have to be given 4 points a square.
