The age difference is not that apparent - he’s a keen cyclist and stays fit and active. I’ve been too polite/nice to a chap who comes into my local cafe. He often pops in to have a cuppa with a woman who was a friend of his mum’s. I know her to say hello to and started saying hello to him too, as he was sat with her. He caught me on the hop and asked if I fancied a cycle ride with him. I said I hadn’t done a long cycle for ages, but hoping to put my bike back on the road soon after fitting some lights and doing a service. After pushing for the cycle ride and getting no joy because I’m busy, (I am! Started new job and also executor for my Dad’s estate) he’s now pushing for a drink/meal and whining that I’m always busy. I’ve told him I’m struggling to see my established friends, let alone going out with new ones. You think he’d take the hint! It’s a wee bit stressful, as I keep bumping into him and feeling a bit annoyed that he thinks he’s entitled to a date. Intense weirdo; or is it me not being firm enough?

Try to be nice and civil and then have to get firm. I’ve found recently that there are a lot of annoying chatterboxes out there at the moment. I know I sound a bit antisocial, but I work and volunteer. There are a number of people who do a stream of consciousness spiel at both those places on a regular basis. I end up having to nod and wander off to do bits of my job. Feels a bit rude, but then so is full-on yakking with no opportunity to interject or if I do try to engage; they’re not interested, even though we’re discussing the same topic. One young guy does it to all of us and even when we turn our backs to do stuff on the workbenches; he’s breathing down our necks - yak, yak, yak. I blame lockdowns and people are making up for lost time. I ended up talking to myself during the lockdowns, so maybe that’s why I don’t feel the need to chew people’s ears off. (Although ironically, I’ve scribbled a bit stream of consciously here. Oops - sorry!)
