Agree with eat and run as well. Very inspiring and I have made a few diet changes after reading it.

Of the stuff I've been reading recently: Running with the Kenyans - Fantastic book, couldn't put it down. Admittedly the cynic in me says that sort of thing is self funding because I'm fairly sure the intention had always been to write a book out of his experiences but, even so, I wish I had the balls to chuck it all in and disappear to Africa with the wife and kids with nothing to do but run. Feet in the clouds - Another vote for this book. I'm a southerner born and bred, as far as I'm concerned it's grim any further north than Dorking but I was really inspired by the people, the history and the scenery. Slow Burn by Stu Mittleman and Be a Better Runner by Sally Edwards and others - Unless you want to read the same thing over and over again and, in Stu Mittleman's case, with gallons of New Age philosophy spin, don't bother. |

Agree about Mittleman. I stopped reading when he started babbling on about the pseudoscience of kinesiology. Recently read P & D's Road Racing For Serious Runners; although a little out of date (some of the photo's will raise a chuckle), it's a very informative read.

Reaaly enjoyed Born to Run. Running with the Kenyans was ok but not as good as BTR in my opinion. Recently started on Breaking the Wall - only a few pages in but not impressed with the prose style so far.

Agree with the consensus here - Born to Run, Feet in the Clouds and Running With the Kenyans are all fab. I am still working my way through "Ghost Runner" which is slightly disappointing so far - amazing story, but rather grimly told.

Love my mate Rosie's book (have I mentioned she is my mate before ) also Jurek's, Born to Run and The Ghost Runner I enjoyed lots. Currently got Murakami's and Wellington's on my iPod for listening to whilst running. Started the first and enjoying it so far. Must get Feet in the Clouds and Spedding's... |

If it hasn't been mentioned yet, Charlie Speddings book is a winner. I used to get my medicines from his dads pharmacy when I was a kid...

I gave up on the Ghost Runner. Bit dreary. Murakami is as much about writing as it is about running, and also about ageing and acceptance. Charlie Spedding's book was chirpy and easy to read. Born to run is a ripping yarn. Feet in the clouds I half enjoyed, then it got a bit samey. I liked the first half and then it went blahdiblah so and so place and such and such person and I started failing to give a shit. Goater's book is great, but is a how to sort of book with a few illustrative anecdotes. Running with Kenyans was a moderately interesting read. Eat and run was impressive when it came to his accomplishments, but a bit of a ridiculous overselling of his raw vegan cranky diet. Yes, Scott, I'm delighted you eat nothing but adzuki beans and carob, but all that chopping sounds fucking exhausting. Little run around the world is on my kindle waiting for the mood to strike. It's surprising really how very few excellent books about running there are. Is it hard to write about running? It's easy to blog about the odd race or run here and there, but constructing a narrative seems difficult. I suspect you end up with a cliched load of garbage like that Fast Girls film (which I thoroughly enjoyed). |
