I've only ever successfully given blood once. The first time I went I'd had a piercing, the second time I failed the test tube test, the third time was fine.
Then I got ill and had to have a transfusion and platelets so now I'm not allowed to donate at all. Which seems odd. Surely the blood they gave me had been screened (at least I would hope so!), so I don't understand why I can't donate now.

CC2- I suspect it's to stop any mistakes being multiplied, no matter how low the probability.

They brought that in a while ago, I think it was after 1986? MAybe something changed so they did it for extra safety?
CC2 at least you have tried (and been once!) which is more than most people

The screening question is 'have you received a blood transfusion since 1980?'. I wonder if it's something to do with CJD???

Here we go:
Q Why are people who have or think they may have received a blood transfusion since 1980 no longer able to give blood? A This step has been implemented by all four of the UK Blood Services on 2nd August 2004. It is a further precautionary measure against the possible risk of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (vCJD) being transmitted by blood and blood products.
vCJD is thought to be the consequence of eating contaminated beef, related to BSE (or mad cow disease) in UK cattle after 1980. Fortunately, vCJD is very rare. But in late 2003, there was evidence that a blood donor transmitted vCJD to a patient, via transfusion. Scientists are not 100% sure that this is the case, as it is possible that both donor and patient acquired vCJD by eating contaminated beef.

I'm glad I hadn't invented that! Must have heard it somewhere before.
I am a mad cow, but I hopefully don't have human mad cow disease. How long would it take to manifest itself? I had my transfusion in 2000.

Oooh, southcoastpete, I looked into doing Anthony Nolan (not "doing" Anthony Nolan, you understand, as that would be wrong in, well so many ways) but being on their donor list. Then I discovered that there is considerable discomfort, time out of work and even risk in donating bone marrow. And I chickened out. So Uber Well Done to you for a significant sacrifice.
Will GB on Thursday. Want to do my pacy(ish) run on Wed, so seems sensible. Well done everyone for keeping on giving (and Jacs for bumping the thread to remind us!!) :-)G
