Isn't he the main carer for his wife, who has dementia? Sounds like quite a decent thing to be doing.
Also, I'm not sure it was really his goal to be loved.

Just because he's his wife's carer doesn't stop his public persona being that of a charmless git. I think such a persona was always his goal.

I've always been of the opinion that John Lydon was a pointless waste of organs, so learning that he does actually have the compassion, patience, and devotion to care for his wife was a huge surprise. (the fact it probably keeps him too busy to clutter up the TV with his self agrandizing twaddle is a nice size benefit)

(I think his public persona is very much just a part of him. He comes out quite well in other people’s accounts of him, for example Viv Albertine’s autobiography. He’s been with his wife since the Seventies.)
