There is another theory that the nozzle of the petrol pump on the picture represents the side that your car should be on when approaching the pump. i.e the opposite side to where your tank is.

Was overtaken by one this morning - the rider (?) stood nonchalantly with his hands in his pockets as he tootled along. Unfortunately I didn't get to see how he stopped and/or started since the pedestrian crossings were in his favour!
