[TomahawkMike- I have ordered a velcro-type replacement but might try your method whilst waiting for it to arrive]
I have learned that there is a small arrow next to the petrol pump logo on the fuel gauge of the car, telling you which side the petrol cap is on. Apparently this is on all cars but I have never noticed it before!

I thought the handle of the petrol pump logo indicated which side it wasn't on. This may also coincide with the arrow.
