Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch
or for an ad-free Fetcheveryone experience!

What do you know today, that you did not yesterday?

The Basque terrorist organisation ETA originally had an acronym of ATA but it was changed because, in the Gipuzcoan Basque dialect, ata means duck.

[I hope this is not disrespectful, it is certainly not meant to be. If the moon is not sighted due to, say, cloud, does that delay Eid?]

[ Heinzster I'm in no way a scholar of Islam but a little searching brought up this reference, in which the month is counted as thirty days if the moon is obscured by cloud.

The village Down Ampney (birthplace of Ralph Vaughan-Williams) is pronounced Down Amney.

I didn’t know it was a village ChrisHB - to me (and I suspect a lot of ‘my type’), Down Ampney is a tune.

Did the locals tell you that Chris? In Cheltenham, not a million miles away, there would be a definite 'p' sounded in that name.

I recall my MiL saying that Cirencester should be pronounced 'Cissiter'. I checked this with colleagues who were from generations of Gloucestershire dwellers who to a man said 'rubbish'. If anything you'll hear it referred to as 'Ciren'.
