Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Reminds me of a trip to Ireland in (I think) the early '90s when they were in mid conversion. Most signs in miles except the 'new ones' which were mostly, but not exclusively, in km. No end of confusion until you realised what was happening.

Oh I remember that from a cycle trip around 1990 - I'd ride a long way on back roads with old signs in miles, get close to the destination and need to join a more major road, see a sign in km and panic about how it was still a lot further to go than I'd thought!

SI units are just so much easier to deal with than Imperial nonsense. Should have converted road signs years ago and told all the dinosaurs to f*** off ;p

Worst unit ever is the slug. Caused me so many issues at Uni as an Engineering student.

I just realized that wind where I come from measures in meters per seconds.
I guess it's not very difficult to just multiply by 4 (or 3.6 if you want to be accurate) to give a km/h figure.

Interesting thread :)
I run and log in miles - and a 10k race is therefore 6.2 miles - although I will glance at the watch when I pass the km signs. Agree about the last .2 I switched from kms when I bought my first garmin as the beeps were too frequent! I cook with metric weights though - apart from pastry and pancake batter as I use my Mum's recipes and they don't quite work in grams!
Have always measured my height and weight in Imperial. I know I'm exactly 5' 6" and I have no idea what that is in cms!

Nice one cerretonia. Although โ€œweโ€ are used to that unit and basically nothing else is used for wind. But still nice way of putting it in perspective.

I find Kms come round too short when driving.

The temperature one is funny, I have to convert when talking to Americans.

Must admit I grew up with imperial and prefer the units - we were taught both but I find metric measurements arenโ€™t as practical in every day life. Bigger gaps between units I think.

An other interesting thing is that you can use the Fibonacci sequence to change from miles to km as well. Well somewhat anyway :)

One of my old (UK) passports had Centrigade to Farenheight conversion on all the pages. I had to refer to it more often than I'd have liked (I default to Centigrade/Celsius).

I have visited the BIPM on the outskirts of Paris, so count me part of team SI (never got to see any of the artefacts, though :( ).

I just realized that wind where I come from measures in meters per seconds. ๐Ÿ˜ฑ And itโ€™s told like this โ€œoh itโ€™s blowing 20 second meters outside nowโ€ Not very intuitive.. That is some poor way of doing it, like the fuel consumption thing

The thing about wind speed is does it mean anything to the average Joe. Same as tennis serve speeds and cricket bowling speeds. Doesn't matter what the units are sometimes, you might as well say fast or very fast for as much as it means to me.

I prefer my wind in mph on the basis that I've got a feeling that 30mph is as fast as car goes past me on a main road, and 10mph is what I'd feel if I I was doing a 10 mile road race in about an hour (which I will never do, but I suppose it's pretty close to my 5k pace).

About This Thread

Units of measurement, could there be a benefit in what system you use?

I shall be a little philosophical now.
To be under, letโ€™s say 60min, on 10km, might be one of the first goals for us exercise weekend warriors. 6min/km.10km under one hour, lots of nice and round numbers.

(I donโ€™t know what you brits call a person who exercises as a hobby?)

But in imperial thatโ€™s like under 9,39min on 6,213 miles. Or something like that.
Not quite the same ring to it.
I know we all are fa...
