Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

Units of measurement, could there be a benefit in what system you use?

I shall be a little philosophical now.
To be under, let’s say 60min, on 10km, might be one of the first goals for us exercise weekend warriors. 6min/km.10km under one hour, lots of nice and round numbers.

(I don’t know what you brits call a person who exercises as a hobby?)

But in imperial that’s like under 9,39min on 6,213 miles. Or something like that.
Not quite the same ring to it.
I know we all are familiar to 10k, that’s just an example.

And because people(humans) like nice round numbers.
What standard distances and times works well for you imperial measuring people, and what standard distances are normal for you?

And can there be a difference in the benefit in what system you might use.
Or is it’s just completely the same either way.
Well I won’t change, :)
But I’m just curious of what people using measurements not based on the metric system, thinks about this. A hazzle, or completely normal?

SI units. Always.

Anything else is unscientific and American nonsense.

I'd change roadsigns into km.

I prefer imperial units (although often have to use SI at work). Not bothered about round numbers.

Westmoors, so when you fill up your gas tank and it stops at exactly 50xxx at exactly 5 pm and the tachometer is at 555555 xx you don’t get a warm and fuzzy feeling? :)

People who work in Imperial are used to rarely running "round number" distance races.
The majority of races are 5km, 10km, Half Marathon and Marathon. There are still a few 5 mile and 10 mile races but not many, and even fewer 20 mile races, but I have ran 1 of them.
I suppose 10 mile races would be the equivalent, then you can aim for 50 or 60 or 70 or 80 or 90 or whatever minutes. In over 10 years of running I think I've only run 4 10 mile races.
Why do the metric people not run "round number" longer races, eg 20k or 30k ? I suppose 20k is too close to the Half, but 30k would be a nice distance, but never heard of any.

Once you get to ultras then 50k and 100k are quite common for track ultras, but road/trail ultras are normally a journey between 2 points or around a loop so most ultras are random odd distances

um
I always run in miles. Pace is per mile.
Bike speeds are mph

Petrol or diesel usage in the car (what's this gas tank thing?) is miles per gallon. Not some weird litres per kilometre.

I'm surprised your still using imperial (if that's what it is) time. Why not 10 or 100 hour days, each made up of 100 'timebits'

The warm fuzzy feeling, for me, is reserved when elevation (in feet) and time are in harmony, eg 1132 or 1530.

(and us 'brits' never call or consider ourselves a 'brit'. British, English, Scottish etc, yes. And I call someone who exercises as a hobby a runner. Or fit. Or an

'afflete')

I log my training here in km, and tend to think in km, but it does result in some odd things, such as my annual target being 2414.016 km, because we have a 1500 miles in a year group.

I find it much simpler to mentally convert between miles and km than I do to convert fractional minutes to minutes and seconds though.

We are approaching the time of the year when I realise I won't make my target mileage for the year in Kilometres and so recalculate everything into Kiloyards and find I've run 10% further than before.

Merry Fizzmas :-)
I would run 6 miles. 10 minute miling. Just as round, not quite as fast :-)

Mind you, for small distances, I think in a mix of both metric and imperial. Six inches. Two metres. Etc. And I’m equally happy cooking in both metric or imperial, my add and weigh scales do the complicated bits so I don’t have to.
