I had a go at the Vale of Glamorgan last year, Carolyn, but DNF - too slow due to 1) huge blister on sole of foot, and 2) too much mud, just can't cope with the stuff.

Difficult to choose best sort of shoes to wear for this one as it's a real mix of trail, mud, rocks, swamps, beaches, fields, caravan parks, very long boring industrial bit around Aberthaw power station and road. And not forgetting Barry Island, of course. I went with trail shoes and they didn't work for me, hence the blister.

Thanks Jabberknit, sorry to hear you didn't finish. I'm pretty experienced running in mud, and the shoes I wore for my trail marathon (adidas tr boost) are actually ok on tarmac too - good mix of cushioning and big lugs for the mud. Sounds like they will hopefully be the best choice for the Vale too.

I'd say sandals as a choice...

But I'd say that for any course :-p

Might concede to socks on the Peddars Way at the end of the month if the weather actually turns cold...

Don't think the mud would have been so bad if it hadn't have rained solidly for 24 hours immediately before the race, carolyn_t. I managed 24 miles anyway, so not too displeased with that! Apart from the mud and the blister, I did actually enjoy a lot of it.

Best of luck anyway.

I know Flanker... :-)

Quietly avoiding mentioning or thinking about the fact that I have not run for any real distance for a while...

Still. You can bluff little ultras can't you :-p
