Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Does anyone have any experience or tips for getting house insurance to cover the period between exchange and completion? I can't find anywhere that offers this and getting a quote online doesn't cover this eventuality. I think last time (20 years ago) we just took the insurance suggested by the mortgage company but this time it's not a requirement.

Call an insurance provider. I got mine through Aviva and they were able to sort it easily and fairly quickly

Thanks. That was going to be my next call, but I guess that way you don't get to shop around unless you're prepared to call several providers.

Did you get insurance for just that period or did it then convert to normal insurance when you moved in?

IIRC, we got in touch with our current insurers and they set up a new policy that covered the property between exchange and us moving in - we gave them a moving date and they asked that we contact them if that date changed. It was arranged that the policy changed on that date to insure us from moving in. If that makes sense...

I can't remember if I had to phone them once we'd got a time to collect the keys to activate the switch.

Thanks. We are currently in rented so don't have buildings, only contents, which actually runs out anyway at the end of the year.

I converted mine to a full policy effective for completion day. For various reasons Aviva could give me a good price and I was already an existing customer so it was fairly straightforward. I didn’t shop around that year.

Thanks. We have other insurance through Aviva, so perhaps that's a good bet. I'm currently on hold to Direct Line (25 mins...)

A super helpful woman has just quoted me 3x what we used to pay in the old house. FFS. I don't even know why.
