What makes you decide to bin?

That's impressive mileage from shoes, fetch and tipsku. I tend to get 500-600M and then start noticing that the ground feels a bit harder and my feet and legs feel a little sore after a run, and the tread is worn smooth in places (I'm in Brooks Ghosts). If I'm just pootling around I wear them for longer but while I'm marathon training and the load is high I'll start a new pair sooner to help avoid injury. My old trainers become general walking around or gardening shoes, and OH's tri club collects them to send off for recycling periodically too, so they never go in the bin. |

I have a few criteria. If the outer sole is worn, the profile is gone and I start slipping, it's time to bin them. The mid sole will gradually lose springiness over time but you can slow that down by a) rotating shoes regularly so that the foam can bounce back and b) stop using the shoes for long runs after about 1000 miles. Then I can still get about 200-600+ out of them just by using them occasionally for an hour or so. I also get that wear over the achilles because I don't always tie my shoelaces. My right heel seems to dig into the mesh more than the left. This leads to a gaping hole there down to the hard material that gives the shoe its shape. That tells me to bin them - if I get blisters from it. It depends on the shoe shape how many miles I'll get out of a pair. I remember running a hole in the right heel of a New Balance in under 100 miles. If the shoe doesn't fit the shape of my foot, I have to bin them after 300-400 miles if not before. If it fits perfectly, I usually get over 1000 miles out of them. Nike and Saucony have forms that fit my foot. New Balance and Asics get worn out on the inside of the heels in 100-400 miles. Weight may play a part but it also helps that I have a very even foot strike, neither over- nor underpronating, neither a marked heel nor forefoot strike. When you look at the soles of the Pegasus with 1650 miles on them, the profile is relatively evenly worn down from the ball of the foot to the heel, no preference of side with most wear in the middle. |

CasB, agreed, I usually buy a new pair before the next marathon training block so that I have a new pair on rotation for the long runs. The previous pair is probably still good but it helps if I have 2 dedicated long run shoes I can rotate. I have about 5-6 pairs of every day running shoes to rotate, 3 pairs of lightweight racers for races and speed workouts, 3 pairs of trail shoes and 2 hybrid pairs that are lighter than the trail shoes proper but have a better profile than road shoes - Snowdonia marathon would be a good race to wear them, for example. The final stage before binning shoes is walking or bad weather recovery runs. |

I have a couple of pairs of trainers stashed in the wardrobe but also get a lot of wear out if my shoes. My biggest issue at the moment is a bunion on right foot so it wears the uppers out. I did buy a repair kit from green runners ebay.co.uk I have put little patches on where the wear happens in hope of it helping with longevity. I also never loosen trainers and they do start to wear at the back but this covers it up nicely. |

Warm up, parkrun, warm down takes me to 67 for Feb. Christened a new pair of shoes. Just checked and I seem to 11 pairs on the go, of various makes. I never wear the same make two days in a row. One pair in the wardrobe also. And by coincidence Mr Postman has just delivered a shiny new pair of Reebok Floatride Energy X which will go into the wardrobe before they become slippers for a month or two! |
