Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

How would you describe your younger self?

Much the same as I am now. Probably more impulsive, and less patient. I tended to be fairly serious as a child.

Academically I was always a square peg in a round hole. I paid attention but didn't see the point of quite a lot of my education. I was always far more practical.

Always sporty. Quite good at anything that required hand to eye coordination. Did well enough at Cross Country (especially if there were hills involved) , but couldn't see the point of track and field (still can't really).

Reasonable swimmer, but ditto competitive swimming (can't see the point).

Had one serious girlfriend. married her. Actually she was the first girl I kissed as well. Not that I was shy. I traded Mayfair magazines with the best of them.

Not sciency enough for TBBT, Dvorers, though probably about as lacking in social skills. I had basically no friends at all through school and uni was foolish enough to try and be a 'cool girl' in the goth/rock scene - mistaking objectification for acceptance.

I had a lot more time and less money for aesthetics, back then, though, (despite being a bit of a late starter - there wasn't much style going on, beyond black and baggy, until at least 15). I had high maintenance hair colours and wore makeup pretty much all the time, and made a lot of stuff myself.

Honestly? Straight A nerdy outdoorsy schoolkid until discovering sex, drugs and rock'n'roll. Literally. Cue 10+ years of fun and carefree life, then a disastrous abusive first marriage led to me rediscovering the outdoors, finding my now husband, and having a much better balance in life.

Uncomfortable in my own skin. Painfully shy. Lacking confidence and unable to see much in me to be confident about.

Except the sport I did.

Less of both extremes now.
