Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Good morning, happy Friday to one and all, :-)

Dipps, please could you remove me from Chicago marathon in October, even if we are allowed to travel to USA and the marathon goes ahead I don’t believe it’s a good idea to fly or take part, no travel or races for us for at least the remainder of this year.

Morning! A swim in the sea for me, fairly soon I think to take advantage of the tide. Eek, excited and a big apprehensive!

Then my son and GF are coming over for lunch and to take advantage of our much better wifi to finish their working week :-) (Throughout lockdown their wifi has been a problem despite new routers etc. You'd think, since they live in a city and we're in a quiet little town, they would have the better connection, but no :-( )

Good morning all :-) shame about work :-( but hope the day goes well for everyone, & also that next week is trouble free Pothunter luck
I’ve run very slowly & now sitting with (hopefully) prophylactic ice on last years stupid ankle, think we’re going out later on bikes & taking sandwiches, if I make them. Happy sea swimming LD, just what’s needed after a marathon :-)

You academics are not easily discouraged...

(slightly obscure song reference)

Morning :-) I might test the knee out later as it is recovering better than I'd expected. Should be fine in a straight line on relatively even ground, i.e. not descending steep woodland tracks.

Today's dose of holiday dream ....

Heading north today on the planned, booked, but not taken holiday.

200 miles and 4 hours in the car, leaving Sonoma and the wine and the weeping angels behind, heading to Redding and a Sheraton, not an airBnB.
And my trusty guide book is no use. It only covers the coast road. So this is uncharted territory and even having to use the web for info. No more of my pics either.

There’s not much en-route, other than a long straight road, Vacaville, California’s car & truck sales showroom centre. Whatever you think of in terms of scale, be prepared to be amazed at the size and scale or the car & truck lots here.
Even the ‘top 10 things to do’ for towns on the way list more shops and diners than actual attractions. And these are big towns – Williams (pop 5324), Red Bluff (pop 14,283).

I did find these 2 alternative attractions to break up the drive
- Sacramento River Bend : a rich and diverse habitat for deer, salmon, bald eagles, osprey, migratory, and song birds. As you walk through the wetlands and along the creeks, keep an eye out for turtles, beavers, river otters, turkey vultures, deer, and even mountain lions. Watch out for rattlesnakes!

- Route 36 : California Route 36 is considered one of the most scenic and most dangerous roads in the country. The paved road consists of 140 miles of sharp and often unpredictable and unexpected twists and turns. Route 36 passes amazing and diverse topography, including some lovely redwood forests, and at many points it offers wonderful views, but you will be too busy trying to stay on the road to be able to enjoy the vistas. The road is mostly in great condition, except in a few spots where it gets a bit rough. It has big stretches with guardrails with scary drops on the other side.

So what better way to break up a 200 mile drive – take a 140 mile side trip on the US’s ‘most dangerous road’ …
We may ignore those and push on to see the Shasta Cascades – more our sort of thing.

Anyway, on safe arrival in Redding (pop 91,772) and the glitzy world of hotel & lounge with free food and drink.
