Well, as a free to play mobile game, the usual warnings about gacha and MTX apply.
That said, I've progressed quite nicely using the free in-game gems (10 a day from a friendly cait, plus bonuses when the day ends in an 8, and lots of in-game achievements). Currently sitting on a team of 5 5*s, 2 4.5*s, a bunch of 4s and some useless 3s.
The story, such as it is, is set before the Switch game. You start with three story paths with 3 big bads, and (once you've cleared chapter 1 of one of these) you can complete these in any order. Afterwards there is a long unifying chapter which opens the world out a lot, with some tough fights. They've recently released a further chapter - but I'm not there yet. Alongside these you have "Traveler [sic] Stories", which are 4 chapter stories based on recruitable people for your party. The 3* stories are pretty dull, and fall into distinct categories (find a husband, slay a monster, help me become better for my faaaaamily). The 4 and 5* stories are more interesting and tend to be more unique.
You control up to 8 champs in a team at a time, switching between rows in battle. Random encounters are fun and generally swift things. There's also "Elite" fights dotted around the map which are more satisfying fights where you tend to need to think more, or over-level.
Overall, it's a bit of a battery chomper, but I've found it engaging to check in each day for short bursts, and some longer sessions. It's free, so doesn't hurt to try it out to see if it's for you.
