I'll likely buy an off the shelf ready built system. And not an overly expensive one either.

Looking to keep it under £700 if I can.

What I really want is a mini desktop PC with a decent size SSD (512 would probably do it, although 1TB would be nice), a decent processor and a decent graphics card capable of handling some games.

It's primarily going to be used as a general PC with some processing (matlab), some image processing and a bit of gaming, but much of it is likely to be older games anyway.

I'm not after state of the art - can't afford that anways.

Reason I'm looking at mini-PCs as space where I'm going to put it is somewhat restricted. I could manage a full size tower, but I'm also likely to refurbish an old tower at some point to use as a home-server and don't want two bigger towers.

As I said, you can get a laptop with that spec for that money. Unless you def want a unit that you can't move (or if you wanted lots of ports or easier future upgrades or for some other physical reason) then laptop isn't any more expensive, it seems? :-) G

Funnily enough, these days I find laptops take up more space than a well speccd desktop as you end up with a keyboard on the desk for the laptop as well as a more usable one, and then two screens as a laptop screen isn't really up to scratch. So if space is an issue, desktop becomes a much better option, caveating that with if you want 2x screens then a laptop is a good option.

I agree though that price-wise for actual computing spec, laptops offer really good value, in line with desktops.

Or if you want to take it to your bedroom or kitchen?!

As you say, I def use the 2 screens too. My laptop is on top of a couple of bits of stereo kit so doesn't really take up my space, puts it at right height. My other screen is 43" telly! :-O (Was cheaper than a monitor and twice the size. And it gets Netflix!) :-) G

From a friend, but there's a site you can review components / configs and get a relatively unbiased view.
I'm still happy with a laptop & monitor. The laptop keyboard is fine for my needs. Mainly phot & image processing, I'm not a gamer.
I added to the laptop SSD (128BG) and HD (1 TB) with a 12TB Western Digital external drive and a lifetime 2TB cloud from pCloud. Which might need topping up soon. I take a lot of photos.

Simply add in the component and it will tell you how it will perform based on thousands of others having benchmarked their machines. userbenchmark.com you can compare configurations too.

Got something to say?

About This Thread

Need a bit of advice - need to replace a desktop replacement laptop (~8yr old) and was thinking of getting a small PC instead as I'd like something with a decent graphics card - not just so it can play games, but also so it can handle some image processing stuff a bit better.

I'm about 15yr out of date on graphics cards as I've generally had laptops with inbuilt graphics cards, so have absolutely no idea what I should be looking at.

Any ideas/general advice? Don't want ...
