He still occasionally humps things though - most irritatingly my leg when I’m trying to do an exercise class in the living room (as Pen says, likely over excitement) - so there’s no guarantee it’ll stop the behaviour.

Dehydrated food is not something I’ve come across but definitely worth looking in to. We let Charlie be castrated at 11 months on the advice of the vet. He was constantly humping but also marking everywhere, inside and out, and it was getting very embarrassing when we visited friends. Fortunately for us, castration didn’t seem to bother him in the slightest (he was back to his normal self within 24 hours) and instantly “cured” the antisocial behaviour.

Every time I read that it didn't have any impact, or made dogs more fearful, I then read that for someone else it worked really well, and stopped the behaviours that were unwanted but didn't change their personalities. Has anyone tried the chemical castration first?

If you want to wait till he’s fully grown, will a couple of months without and using a dog walking service do him any harm? It might leave him a bit more energised on an evening, bit of he’s already ok with a dog walker then is day care needed? Like anything, different treatments will affect different dogs in different ways. Ours are Dogs Trust so came neutered/spayed. Personally, unless it was a real behavioural or medical issue, if we’d got dogs from pups I’d have waited till adulthood.

He needed to be at daycare because of their work commitments and in any case they didn't want the dominance to get worse, so had him done. It hasn't had any negative consequences (and we're now a good 18 months on.)

He doesn't need to attend, it was handy for my work though but it was primarily to socialise him when younger and its done that job. Dog walker is now taking him 5 days a week. She was more than happy to fit him in even though Mondays are her busiest day. Said he is actually one of the easiest dogs to manage as he comes immediately to the whistle.
