Love the origami Louise! I've been teaching myself to knit recently and would echo the Youtube recommendations especially Very Pink Knits for very clear videos! I started with the 'How to knit' pages on gathered.how, and made lots of squares to practise different patterns (if you look on their 'how to do xxx stitch' pages they have loads you can pick from), increases, decreases, cabling etc. The written descriptions on Gathered are okay but watching a demo on YouTube was far better, especially for things like long tail cast on. Then I moved on to some really easy patterns on Ravelry (made lots of use of the search function and comments from other knitters) and have made a cowl, a hat and a baby cardigan. For each pattern I went for something that was mostly familiar and just introduced one or two new things. I've had to unpick a bit (and the cardi cast on took me three goes!) but it's felt like a good way to build some confidence. Hope that helps - sorry for long post! |

Thanks for all the comments - so if, as a novice, I wanted to make a baby cardigan would that be too ambitious? Which would be better to try, do you think, knitting or crochet? I have a grandchild arriving in October and would love to make something for him or her. My mother has the baby blanket covered, but I'd like to do something as well.

Iβve only just seen this thread and would love to learn to crochet. Iβve just gone on Amazon to look at beginners books and there are several with mixed reviews. Which one did you find useful GM? |

I got this one, LL. amazon.co.uk There is a newer version out now according to that page. LR, I pause the You Tube video every few seconds whilst I follow what they are doing then restart it. Stitches are usually repeated a few times on the videos so this gives time to get the hang of the stitch or technique. I found them really helpful. Nearly every time I knit a new thing, there is something I need help with. |

Crochet is quicker than knitting but the fabric is generally a bit denser so can be less good for clothing. I also find getting gauge with crochet more difficult as stitch height can vary a lot depending on how you form the stitch, mine are generally too short. However itβs easier to fix mistakes or fudge with crochet. Iβd say choose whichever you feel most comfortable with. |

LR I do exactly as GM says with the YouTube videos, and they usually use bigger needles and thicker yarn so you can really see what they're doing. If you go for knitting, this worked for me - ravelry.com - it's top down, all knit and purl and just some M1 increases for the sleeves which were really straightforward to pick up from YouTube. |

Thanks runnyeyes I was looking for something different to knit once I finish my lacy circular shawl, which is taking forever only 30 rounds to go but 380 stitches per round!

Loving all the work that has been done recently. The sweater and pooh origami are so cool. I'm channelling my artist and decorating the hall. The rough picture was me messing around with pens last week. |
