Just looking at my heart rate from yesterdays Half Marathon.

I was into Zone 4 within the first minute of the race and after that spent 43% of my time in Z4 (c.38 mins) and 56% in Z5 (c.50 mins).

Average HR was 171 (c.92% MHR) and was relatively steady throughout

Similarly, pace was held throughout.

Just wondering if anyone had any thoughts/observation? My own expectation would have been for pace to have started to fall off with so much time spent in Z5, but that doesn't seem to have been the case. Pleasantly surprised - but suspect I still haven't found my "proper" max heart rate.

Immediate reaction is your HR zones are little out, and I'm guessing you've actually got a higher HRMax then you think - because you're well trained it's harder to reach. Zone 5 is maximal and 56% in this zone sounds wrong, I would expect to see much more in 4. (Waits for someone else to come and correct if I'm wrong).

Cheers Chris, that's what I was thinking.

Club sessions are back in a fortnight, all hills so should get to test MHR a little better at those.

Hr max may be a little higher but given you kicked hard in last .1 and only got to 176 it's not a lot higher

Nice run Paul, going on what I can hold for a HM I'd guess your true max HR might be around 191 and you spent the majority of the run teetering below/on your Lactate turnpoint.

Reporting in with another HRV update.

So I'm injured (knee is a bit swollen so no running/biking/rowing and only limited weights that I can do lying, sitting or hanging) so you'd think the HRV would be saying I'm well rested and can do what I want.

For the first couple of restricted days when I was doing very little it actually advised that I restrict training due to the HRV being lower than usual.

On reflection this does make sense. I've had depression in the past when I can't train and I was getting a bit worked up about how long I'm going to be out with this. If HRV reflects "stress" rather than just training stress then I'd say that's totally the way it should be.

Since then I've worked out what I can do around the knee and I've started doing a bit more mindfulness meditation to settle my head. This morning the HRV was back in normal parameters.

Hills of Death (HOD)
I'm back on this after my 'coach' has told me there's no point in doing heart rate as it's always different.

(I thought that was that was the point)

Everything you need to know about training with a heart rate monitor. Remember the motto "I can maintain a fast pace over the race distance because I am an Endurance God". Mind the trap door....

Gobi lurks here, but for his advice you must first speak his name. Ask and you shall receive.

A quote:

"The area between the top of the aerobic threshold and anaerobic threshold is somewhat of a no mans land of fitness. It is a mix of aerobic and anaerobic states. For the amount of effort the athlete puts forth, not a whole lot of fitness is produced. It does not train the aerobic or anaerobic energy system to a high degree. This area does have its place in training; it is just not in base season. Unfortunately this area is where I find a lot of athletes spending the majority of their seasons, which retards aerobic development. The athletes heart rate shoots up to this zone with little power or speed being produced when it gets there." Matt Russ, US International Coach
