Listen out for nuthatch. Very loud incessant staccato 'machine gun' call

DT, yes, but there's quite a lot of variation, too, in the call. I'm more tuned into it this year. A curious thing I have found is that the Merlin ID app, at least on my phone, seems to have a lot of difficulty recognising nuthatches in a way it doesn't with most birds. A few times now I've been standing with the sound ID going and a nuthatch has been piping away nearby and nothing has shown up. Yet the briefest snippet of a robin some way off is instantly picked up. Odd.

Merlin got my nuthatch - I'd already seen it and thought that's what it was, then used Merlin and it picked it up.

Later in the summer when there are family groups of nuthatches foraging together, the incessant noise is just gorgeous
I heard my first blackcap of the year yesterday

I've been to local Airedale hospital today. As a little treat I pulled over on the way where I know there is always a good number of willow warblers. They were there and I stopped for a minute or two listeninv anx smiling

Lovely, Tup.
I saw a nuthatch last week in local park either investigating a tree hole; or having already bagged it. The park is a woodpecker haven, so plenty of old nest sites.

Heard nuthatch locally for the first time here a couple of days ago, hope they like it and hang around
Looked up from my sofa seat shortly before dusk and there was a sparrowhawk sitting on the fence a few feet away - he didn’t give me time to pic up phone and take a pic.

I once did a sponsored cycle ride from the Lake District to Leicestershire during which it rained non-stop for the whole 180 miles. One of the only consolations was the sound of curlews calling through the rain on the hillsides (and it was a very hilly ride!)
