They were both barn owls. However, now you've said that there was a third bigger bird I wondered was an owl (though definitely not barn owl) but I didn't see for long enough really and too far away, which could have been a SEO. Both over the Bilsdale area. The first was by the plantation near Wath Hill, the second just below Lord Stones towards the scout hut near Kirkby. It was duskish time so the right time of day to see any of the owls.

Nice, I've not seen Barn Owls up on the NYM but I've seen SEOs a number of times over on the moorland between Highcliffe and Percy Rigg. I shall have to try and head up that way at a suitable time. Now the nights are shortening and they are likely to have young finding Barn Owls out hunting in twilight tends to get easier.

The second one particularly almost certainly looked like it was hunting. It was a prolonged sweep round and back low over the moors.

I reckon I've only ever seen a barn owl for as long as that before, and that was a parent with youngster a few years ago. The highlight that day was the little man was with us and he really enjoyed it.

Barn owl is doing really well in the Brontë area whereas SEO numbers are down. We watched a barn owl quartering at last light recently. Always bigger and whiter than you remember and always a treat

I'm always amazed how tiny they then are when they land and fold their wings.

Saw a tree creeper today! Stood and watched it for ages working it's way up the tree trunk.

I think I just saw the briefest of glimpses of another flying over the road. Puts it into context the length and quality of the sighting last night. Even when I'm running and see one it's all so brief, once I got to less than 5 yards away before I even saw it!

The house I grew up had lots of treecreepers (and nuthatches visiting). As you say, they're great to watch doing their stuff for so long. Often from tree to tree too.

I saw (I think) my first ever goldcrest a couple of weeks back along the Skerne behind the allotments at Whinfield.

I've never noticed any treecreepers or nuthatches in South Park but I'm guessing they're ideal territory for them.

I saw a nuthatch on my lunchtime walk on Monday, first time I've spotted one in the woods near work :)
