puzzler
The Arsenal situation means players have foregone £25m in wages. Assuming reasonably that pretty much all of it is taxed at the top rate then HMRC/NHS is out of pocket by over £11m. The club had a drop in income but was never in danger anyway and so the multi billionaire owner is the main beneficiary.
Meanwhile nobody is mentioning all the football league clubs who are in real danger of going under.

I look at this way.......... If I was offer 25k a week to do my job I would not say "dont be stupid, I am only worth a grand". I would sign the contract. You cannot blame the footballer, you have to blame the clowns paying it. Yes, they are paid way above their worth, but you also never see what a lot do for charity etc on the quiet.

Don't often see Barcelona footballers down by Beeston parkrun, but today the world's best player was there.
Or at least his car was.

You're dead right Legster, how is a footballer not a wealth generator?

A footie pro is retired a long time - and there are only so many little pubs and newsagents to go round....to say nothing of coaching or managerial posts.

They are not generating wealth, they are spending their wealth. It is a total different kettle of fish.

What happens to the wealth after they spend it FR?
I'd suggest that it goes to the businesses that they buy stuff from, and to govt in tax, and to employees in wages, and to their suppliers, and so on to their employees.
That, strangely enough, is how an economy works.

Can't say that I agree with Fenner's saying that footballers don't generate wealth. They do for the kit manufacturers and sponsorships they are paid for or else the companies wouldn't dish out the cash. Agents benefit from the players they manage. Fifa and Uefa generate money as do the successful clubs through image rights and merchandise.
Footballers are paid entertainers. They are no different than actors. Revenue is generated from their activities but the money is probably not widely distributed (or locally).

If footballers don’t generate wealth I’m amazed Sky aren’t streaming live from all the grounds this weekend.

Regardless of how much they spend, the vast majority of footballers are wealthy, not rich.
Their advisors see to that.
So they generate wealth firstly for themselves.
Of course there are exceptions who spaff the lot
