Nice. I was in the Gulf with the Americans. We had to put up with mobile Baskin Robins, Dunkin’ Donuts, a cinema and a 50m pool. Plus all the great fresh rations. It was a tough gig.

I never got to try field rations, being based in a static unit in West Berlin. We had a steak bar with T-bones bigger than the plate, with all the trimmings. And that was just in the airmen's mess. God knows what they were feeding to senior NCOs and officers - beluga caviar and foie gras washed down with Bollinger at a guess. In all seriousness, I was always hugely impressed with the level of catering found on RAF bases, I literally don't know how you did it. I was based at Digby for six months between promotions and the mess was absolutely first class. Also lived in an Army mess for two years and it was reasonable, but not as good as you fly boys managed. By contrast, the standards in RN messes was pretty shoddy, the worst I ever experienced was at HMS Excellent (Whale Island) when I was doing a Divisional Officers course. Best was probably at HMS Collingwood, that was a wealthy (big) mess and could afford to supplement costs. Afloat the food was pretty average, worst was HMS Glasgow on a visit to the Baltic/St Petersburg in company with the Royal Yacht. Subsurface it was generally very good, bread was always in short supply (they baked their own) and there wasn't space to stow things like breakfast cereals, but the chefs made an effort. They had to live close to everyone else after all! |

In Berlin we were subsidised or maybe even paid for by the city administration, if I recall correctly. As occupying forces. And Berlin of course was a wealthy city. Messes at other bases I passed through were also pretty good. Army ones in my limited experience were okay. In a more recent life I had to visit several military bases but as a civilian was shown to the trough in the officers' mess. I was shocked by how poor it was. Cheap canteen cook by numbers stuff, served by staff who barely spoke English. Obviously been outsourced to the cheapest offer. |

Yeah that's an interesting one, bomb on train? If so, where did the train set off from?
