Nice Joe1970, well done. I think hanging on is parr for the course regardless.

Excellent work Joe1970 sounds like you gave it everything. Bet the wind was tough? Some good stuff on tapering. The thing that hasn’t really been touched on is that for older folk or those with chronic injuries, taper time is a kind of firebreak between the relatively high risk of training near one’s edge, and the chance to heal before the intensity of the race. Once I’ve nursed my fragile calves and achilles tendons through a training block, my priority is getting to the startline without further damage. That trumps any marginal benefits of a few more miles at marathon effort for me. I was delighted to find out today that apparently the Edinburgh marathon has neither route clocks or pacers. I’m looking forward to that😎 |

I've never really paid much attention to it before but I guess now that I am following more people on here, its nice to see sooo many notifications up top that show strength, mobility, yoga training etc; and much shorter runs from everyone as we all appear to be nearing race day together. Noice!

PB by 45 minutes, SailorSteve - but its a bit of a cheat really as I'd only ever done trail marathons before, so a reasonably flat road course was always going to be easier! But it's a marker in the sand as to what I might be able to do I guess. I quite like the phrase firebreak to describe the easing off of intensity a bit before race day. Have been slightly paranoid about getting injured having put all the work in, which would just be depressing. And it makes sense to have the occasional easier week even without specific goals, I imagine. I'm very much a fan of the strength and mobility training as well as running...and it's great to be able to see the advice on here of people who know a whole lot more than I do |

Well run Joe1970 o would imagine it was a bit windy on race day as well. Re tapering like everything else it’s about what works for you. Definitely not one size fits all. Trying to work a plan out for my November marathon making sure I can have a good go at September half. |

I am impressed with your pacing Joe1970 as you have a recent half time suggesting a faster marathon could be possible. I do remember you saying you wouldn't be troubling 3.30 though so kudos to you for judging your own capabilities so well. Really well done again. How are your legs feeling ? I am glad you said rest is a bonus for us older citizens SailorSteve as I have decided the best option for my knee is currently complete rest. Swelling has gone down considerably but still feels a bit creaky. A bit close for comfort but not a lot I can do. |

Hope it continues to ease for you Solo I can see that relative whippersnappers would be keen to ‘stay sharp’ and more power to them, but staying sane and then coaxing another 26.2 out of myself works for me. I think I enjoy the easy, no pressure, tapering bimbles as much as any of my runs. The calm before the storm. I love it. |

Cheers Solo - legs are all good today too! I don't think I left much out there, so figure it was at more or less the right pace, and 1:50 for the first half and 1:55 for the second isn't too embarrassing on the pacing / split front. But had there been another mile I may have had to start crawling The Fetch and Tanda calculators on here were suggesting 3:30 but that always seemed a bit ambitious to me, will have to learn how to convert half marathon times to full. My half PB was 70% WAVA and Sunday was only 62% so I can see there's some work to do if I want to match them up! Rest sounds a sensible option for your knee, look after it! |
