My rule of thumb is that if the injury is significantly aggravated by running, it's a risk and even if you make it to the start line, you're liable to fall apart during the event itself (especially for a marathon when you're really stressing all parts to the limit). If the injury is basically unrelated, then crack on. When I sprained my ankle (twice now in the past decade), I was able to pretty much keep training - they were running injuries of sorts, but didn't interfere with my normal running stride so long as I was plodding along on flat ground. Whereas the sore hip flexor (probably either plain old over-use, and/or descending hills) dragged on for a while, I had to nurse it back to full strength and still get the odd hint of it years later. |

Charles - I see that Berlin is 24th Sep and so 2 weeks of full training to get in before the taper. If I was concerned about having missed a couple of specific sessions in the run up I’d re-jig these 2 weeks to fit them in. If that was a longer MP session or say a 24 miler rather than a 22 then I’d risk the jump in order to give me the piece of mind that I’d got them in.

My own prep for Chicago continues but it’s been a real drag and at times I’ve really found myself running like a blocked drain. I’ve been considering not take the trip tbh but have convinced myself to run the HM I have in the plan next weekend before making a final decision. All that written, I finally had a good day yesterday at parkrun. I totally talked myself out of it on the start line and set off pretty gingerly but found myself feeling great. That meant I could run it progressively to the point where a more confident WW version would have run sub 18. Let’s see…. |

And so Bowman 🇸🇪, how will you approach your target race in October? Something faster? 😄 |

Yes Windsor Wool, if everything is the same or better with my health and body, with a flatter route, colder weather, it should be a bit closer to the 3h mark.

Hi WW, please remove me from the list for a 3:15 attempt. Although I’m still doing the event, that time just ain’t going to happen.

I’m running the Big HM on Sunday which uses quite a lot of the London Marathon course. Perfect time for me to practice the manual lapping approach given the GPS issues there’ll be through Canary Wharf and then in Chicago. larkim do I remember that there’s a purpose-built Garmin screen available to help? I know you’ve talked about it in detail in the past, sorry! |

Yes, there's a couple. The one I use at the moment is called Peter's (Race) Pacer. Saved my sanity round Canary wharf. Though definitely do a couple of practice runs with it to familiarise yourself in advance! |
