Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,

I try and hit the 5 x 1km hard larks, with jog recoveries or even just standing / walking recoveries, esp if doing it in a group. And remember your Garmin flatters your pace for the intervals, so if you think you're going well, go a bit harder! The warm up and cool down are "to taste" (like salt, add what you like, doesn't really matter. Min 1 mile w/up and 1 c/down, but otherwise, whatevs, the intervals are the key thing here, imho! :-) G

I agree with Happy.

The 10K plan from advanced road racing that P (from P&D) drew up has similar sessions. I done 4 x 1200m and 2 x 1000m at 8-10K pace on Saturday with 50% interval time as recovery and didnt worry too much about the warm ups and the warm down.

Hmm. But I'm (sort of!) religiously sticking to their plans, so I *need* to know how the blackhole in their description is filled!! ;-)

I'll do 3 warm up / 2 cool down on top of those intervals. My watch is OK at getting pace accurate over a distance like 1km, but in any event I tend not to watch the watch I go off what I "feel" is my 5k pace (which is the P&D recommended pace for all intervals I think) and then look for consistency once I'm happy I've done an honest rep.

Given that Chester heads to river level at four times on the course, that should make it feel fairly flat, but I think the mis-direction is that the descent from about mile 4 (Eccleston) through the Welsh border down towards Holt / Farndon where it crosses the river again starts from so early in the run that you get used to doing probably about 11-12 miles with a net descent, and in the second half the gradual ascent from the river is then wiped out in one decent downwards drop as you get back to the outskirts of Chester just before Sandy Lane.

Hi Guys. Quick question: What is everyone using now for a running watch, my trusty 305 has finally died (Decent innings mind). Any recommendations? Prefer Garmin!

I'm loving my 235. The wrist HRM seems to work ok and the bluetooth stuff is surprisingly useful (and fun). Battery life is a lot better than my old one (610). Lightly used off eBay saved me a few quid.

How much money do you have? Best watch at the moment is the FR935 IMO (but it's not cheap and might have too many features). FR235 (or FR230 if you are not an optical HR fan) are great watches. FR630 and FR735 are in the middle, but the touchscreen on the 630 isn't the best and the 735 only has a few features over the 235.

Nice reviewing CW. Hi Peacey. Can't help much, I'm still dragging a 310XT around (congrats on getting such a long life out of your 305, very impressive).

i've got the 230 and it's great, but...........
a) You "only" get 2 data screens ( with 4 fields on each screen ), and I'd like to be able to add a 3rd data screen. Yes, I know you can download screens from the Connect IQ store with about 7 fields on them, but they're too "busy".
b) The latest reviews I've seen of the optical HR is that it has been much improved, so I'd definitely now consider it as I normally forget to wear my chest strap.
c) As someone who goes hill walking/running a barometric altimeter would be useful for navigation ( currently wear a 2nd watch for this ),
Given all the above I'm lusting after a 935 :-), but £450.................

The only thing missing from chunky's excellent summary is the Vivoactive HR which seems a decent mid-range alternative to the 230/235, and the more basic FR35 if on a budget.

I have vivoactive HR+ its good. Battery life good, screens good, does what I want but only a few buttons (rest is touch screen).

I still prefer my previous polar m400, software was better. But I got 40% off the garmin with Vitality and the polar discount didnt work so got the vivosmart.

Thanks guys, excellent feedback as always!

Think I'll look at a FR230 as not fussed about the option HR.

I had him for nearly 10 years, decent value that! I'll have a little ceremony this evening.
