I use a free accounting software package to keep track of household expenditure and balance the books. Each month I try and convene a board meeting to discuss the month’s expenditure but Mrs XB isn’t interested.

I’ve used Microsoft Money for decades. All of my accounts, spending, etc. is tracked in there and I can see what’s coming up. It’s a bit of a pain to keep updated, and eventually it will stop working - MS have been trying to retire it for years - but it’s helped me a lot through leaner times, and budget on how much I can save now.

Sigh
I used to use Microsoft Money as well (and before that, a cash book - a habit learned from my Dad); but in these days where transactions usually clear accounts either the same day or within a couple of days, I now track the scheduled payments and use the live account to track monthly expenditure.
I actually have three bank accounts, two of which are pretty dormant; I'm planning on keeping the main one purely for DD's/SO's and then move the daily/weekly stuff into one of the others.

I just add everything up once every few months. The current numbers look weak but I have to remember I was willing to retire with smaller numbers almost 4 years ago and the markets are just fluctuating.

We have two accounts - one for DD's the other for living on what ever is left. Savings are all kept in premium bonds, isa's and savings accounts and dipped into when needed, which thankfully isn't that often. Mum has left me a little bit of money which will now boost the holiday fund pot.

I have a bit of paper which I update periodically which has details of bank accounts, pensions, ISAs, insurance policies etc. Not so much to keep track of how much there is, but in case something happens to me.
