As JDA says! And why I semi-retired in 2014... I just looked at how little I need to live well and once I was recovered enough from.illness, I started free lancing... Only just enough to pay for my essentials. I live very frugally and noone is dependent on me, which helps, but it is only the one income I can rely on. |

I have to say: I nearly died in 2013 so your perspective changes somewhat. Against the odds I recovered but it does make me realise it can be over tomorrow!

Sometimes the optimal approach from a financial aspect isn't the intuitive one, LG, and if you're getting that rent money no matter what it would be worth considering the financial adviser's suggestion, with actual numbers. It may be that the numbers aren't compelling enough to override your instinctive preference, and that's OK, there's no obligation to optimise your income if it's going to leave you feeling insecure. Can you take a chunk of time out and see how you feel at the end of it? You can't keep going on the way you have been, it's breaking you. |

jda and TRO are on the mark, and another way of looking at it is thinking about how many GOOD years you might have left ("healthy life expectancy"). This gov.uk is highly sobering. At 58, if I work another year doing something I don't enjoy I'm squandering over 15% of my statistical remaining healthy life expectancy I expect to do better than that. My mother and her mother would both have considered themselves healthy and unrestricted till 70 and my father is only just starting to show signs of frailty in his 80s but still considers himself healthy. But something unexpected could happen at any time, and unexpected health events become more likely as we get older. |

That is interesting, Vrap. My father had a diagnosis of a brain tumour not long after his 50th birthday but I can't help but wondering if the contact he had with chemicals in the paint trade he worked in had something to do with that. My mum is 81 and reasonably healthy. Just starting to show signs of slowing down.

I am sat in an outdoor area of an amazing appt in Malaga. A Dutch couple bought it in 2017 and have gutted and transformed the place. It’s got me thinking about the life I want to lead. Sadly there are too many obstacles in our way but it’s nice to dream. |
