I never got on the promotion ladder at any of the relatively low skilled jobs I ever did. Due to lack of any decent qualifications or the inclination to manage people for an extra pittance.

Just went in every day performing the best I could then I went home.

I actually think our culture has got a lot better over the last 10 years (maybe down to bosses). I certainly do more than my contracted 35 hours per week and no overtime/TOIL at my level but do not have anyone breathing down my neck day by day. Plenty of stress from stekeholders though but thats down to me to manage.

I know what is expected from me and I am my own worst enemy as want to deliver an good job/product. I have the benefit of full time WFH, which was by fluke that I got a WFH contract when I got my last promotion c8 years ago. They do not give them out now and have never changed it.

Hoping for 4-5 more years and VR :)

Like MsG, I am absolutely rubbish at networking (I can't make small talk), diplomacy (too straight forward), and sucking up to people (too honest and ethical). Plus, I stuck up for patients and colleagues, which didn't endear me to my incompetent boss about whom I have blogged several times.

My responsibility and care towards patients meant that I often worked unpaid overtime for them (the patients) just so that their results wouldn't be delayed.

My boss often used to tell me that my higher salary than that of lower grade colleagues meant that I should be doing 1.5x the amount of diagnostic work than them. He didn't like it when I told him I was paid more because of all the responsibilities I had in the laboratory, my experience, teaching junior staff, my greater knowledge, better technical skills, and being able to make diagnoses by myself - not for working 1.5x faster than colleagues on top of all my other tasks.

My reverse countdown since my retirement is -4,759 days. :-p

When I started in 1986 I got paid overtime and I worked loads extra as it helped me and my family get established. Around 2005/6 I was promoted and got 3 extra days holiday, a potential larger bonus of 2 x the previous and a notional 35 hr week but an expectation of doing the hours required whatever that was. My actual earning dropped and we struggled for a good few years

I am still in that same work contract position and chose to work extra and in a way I have been rewarded with higher bonus/pay rise and job security. Many colleagues who didnt are no longer around or got lower salary/bonus

However, as a 39 years service employee I am paid way below market rate and I probably could have got more rewards elsewhere. However I prefer Being in a company I know, even if its shit

I have had a horrrible few days picking up shit thats not mine to do, but someone has to and I dont want the fall out to land on me when its not done

The situation i referred to the other day is actually going to make things worse. Someone else is leaving and it’s someone who we really could do without losing. No doubt I will end up with more to do as a result

My mind is all but made up and my plans could accelerate. However we have a new senior manager and he seems to actually be a good guy who will make a difference. He has booked his frost townhall tomorrow where I might hear more of his plans. I doubt they will change mine but will listed to what is said

@Bazoaxe Bazoaxe It sounds to me you've long been taken for granted. As long as you don't jeopardise a good pension I'd carry through your plan. That's essentially what I did with 31 years service, and haven't looked back once.

Yeah, although a lot of it has been my choice and I wouldn’t change any decision I have made.

My next decision though is a big one and will be the start of a much better way of life.

Mr J
Doing a good job seems to a rare trait these days. Too many people on the promotion ladder who are clueless and completely deluded about their abilities. About 10 years to go for me. Thankfully I am respected for my professionalism and the way I operate. This has not made me promotion material because I do not shout about how great I am.

I suspect MsG and Flatlander and others who have said that they have been recognised and successful, despite not necessarily being the best networker and certainly not being a rabid-self promoter etc. don't work in corporate world? (Total guess, but for the purpose of the discussion, do correct me if I am wrong, and please accept my apologies!)

So, except medicine, science, academia etc. i.e. talking about "office jobs" (all IT, legal, accounting, HR etc.), "management" (including managers in health, medicine, science etc. I expect, but don't know of course), not sure about actual does in services or manufacturing (but I expect not many of us here are actual hospitality, shop workers, production line workers? Again, massive assumption on my part)... does anyone feel they got to as high or higher a level than someone else who is less able, but more deluded/selfish/arrogant etc. ?!

No need to answer, but I clearly have a hang up about this! ;-) :-P :-) G

It’s not as simple as that HG, medicine / academia / science also have promotion by networking too.

Part of the reason for my success was recognising that I wouldn’t get the opportunity to develop at one work place and moving (across country).

I did not sit around waiting for promotion to find me, I sought it out.

In each case of my promotions, I went up against people with more experience so prepared for interview by making the case for my skills.
The unsuccessful candidates may well have thought that I was not worthy!

I have seen people promoted despite not being capable, because (IMO) they were popular with the boss. Or to stop them leaving when we were short staffed.
