Big benefits for me is the absence of that sinking feeling on a Sunday evening. I also used to find the first couple of days of a holiday were spent shaking off work stress and the last three were spoiled by the thought of getting back to the grindstone. Not any more. Straight outta relaxed mode and into holiday mode. |

I’m soaking in all this retirement loveliness. Well done on those who have reached it early. I’d imagine I’ll be 65 but based on my age that will be short of my state pension age. In any event I’m relying on my sugar mama wife and her teachers pension as I’ve made pitiful pension provision myself. This is probably the worse thread for this question but anyone love their job so much they intend to work for ever? |

Yeah my Dad has always says he needs at least a three week block off for all the above named work stresses either side of the relaxation part.

I AM making voluntary contributions. I don't earn enough! And you can only pay for one year at a time... so it still takes the numbers of years you need to contribute, sadly.

I came here 26 years ago, so making up the Dutch years that suddenly no longer count for example, can't be done, as it is too long ago... same with the contracted out years.

I’m sure you’ve done this already Hanneke but if not there must be some specialist advice available for people in your situation. One of the issues with buying additional year state pension years is the time limit - by the time people are aware of the issue it is often too late. |

Exactly TMW! My lost years are from before my arrival here: caused by Brexit, nothing I can do about it! And my first years here, because I still had partial free lance income from my business in the Netherlands, I was contracted out. Little did I know back then that I would have been better off paying voluntary contributions because I was going to stay here!

um
There are a few exceptions to the 6 year rule, eg (from gov.uk ) You can sometimes pay for gaps from more than 6 years ago, depending on your age. You’re a man born after 5 April 1951 or a woman born after 5 April 1953 You have until 5 April 2023 to pay voluntary contributions to make up for gaps between April 2006 and April 2016. But I have found the whole process cumbersome and difficult ...I've never known it so difficult or time consuming or lengthy to pay someone something! Or how their calculations & sums are arrived at. (now 2 partial years paid up 6 weeks ago, nothing showing yet on DWP site. HMRC reluctantly confirmed receipt but are currently saying it can take 8-10 weeks to process) |
