If I work until I get my state pension, it will be another 17 years... I can't keep gping for that long! And the longer I wait, the more insignificant that state pension...

All of what GM said definitely!
When the Covid restrictions have been lifted I’m looking forward to booking a holiday outside of school holiday time. I’m sure a lot of ex-teachers feel the same.

Are the state pension rules different for EU nationals in the UK, Hann? Because if my sums are right you'll be 73 in 17 years' time.

Yup! I technically cannot retire until I am 73, because I was contracted out when I first moved here and my years worked in the Netherlands no longer count after we left the EU. That is, if I want a full pension. I can obviously retire when I want, I just won't get a state pension or not a full one. You will understand working till I am 73 doesn't appeal!

I can certainly understand not wanting to work until 73, especially when your body has taken a few batterings over the years and your work is heavy gardening

Exactly! Hence being on here, semi-retired as of today! At my own expense I hasten to add! I rather live, without pain and less money! Done beating myself up. If it all works out, then in 2-3 years I should be able to earn a modest living from my medicinal garden and herbalism. Something I don't mind doing until I am 73...

Oh and when I turn 67 I get a tiny dollop from the Netherlands... Which will help, even though almost all my working life was here.

Would it help if you paid voluntary contributions to make up the missing years Hanneke? (ie would you get a full pension much earlier?)

I was wondering that. I’m missing two years of contributions for my state pension but will be able to claim my teaching pension next year. I will use some of that to ensure I can get a full state pension when I reach the right age.

The absence of stress is a beautiful beautiful thing.
Makes me smile every day, even as other parts of (semi) retirement normalise.
