Happy New Year everyone. Just joined this thread on someone's recommendation. I'm starting to plan semi retirement so that I do more stuff, travel more while I still have the energy, health and fitness. Starting with spending a month in Spain this year to improve my Spanish. And co-leading a walk on the Camino de Santiago in May.

I am about 80% confident that although my target date is 31st January 2025, I will actually be finishing on 14th June this year. 72 working days, not allowing for holidays. Nothing official until I decide whether I’m definitely handing in my notice in 11 weeks’ time though. Maybe the job will magically improve . . . |

When I was working f/t if I woke up any time after 3am there was zero chance of getting back to sleep. The stress, worries etc would kick in. Before 3 am sometimes I could get back to sleep unless the worries were unusually extreme. Dreadful way to live. Current p/t has zero stress, it’s a lovely job really but just restricts a bit (still constrained by annual leave etc). I’ll be leaving that job before end March and joining the fully ‘economically inactive’ 😃😃 |

Welcome to this thread SherryB That's a good plan to part-retire to do things that you want while you still can. Most people on here who have already retired are happy to have done so. |

Bucking the trend, my sleep is worse now than it's been since I was a junior hospital doctor and often didn't get any sleep at all for reasons on which my continued employment depended. I'm awake three or four times most nights, sometimes for an hour at a time. However, I have no reason to believe I'm not getting enough sleep, because I'm alert enough in the daytime and rarely need a nap.

Back to work tomorrow and not looking forward to it at all. I console myself that this time next year I'll be starting to see how I can get out for good. In other news my index funds have skyrocketed since October. Suddenly looking much healthier |

Well I've done it. Notice handed in from my part time job - notice period is 3 months so end March. THis is the latest but we'll discuss me possibly going earlier tomorrow, or some sort of WFH arrangement. Could be messy if they hardball as I'm moving to Cotswolds by end January and my house is sold, but I reckon they'll be accommodating re WFH or earlier departure. So I've double dipped really as I counted my leaving BT and full time employment as my retirement but this is the full step. It will not feel as big a change as the leave BT, but good to release the shackles of the 2 days/week as it really opens up travel and other opportunities. Done, dusted and economically inactive at 57 years old. Let's hope I get 15-20 years of good health to enjoy it! Happiness! |

A really interesting programme on sleep on Radio 4 yesterday. All the usual stuff but some added bits. Having a dog is good for tuning into your circadian rhythms apparently.
