I have the my childhood copy of The Goalkeeper's Revenge at home. It's a good story, as are the others in the book. I especially like Spit Nolan

Oh yes. Thanks, Sharks. I just read The Miracle of CdS on Sharkie's recommendation and can only say I agree. I think you would like it, Dio.

I've heard of it, but never read it. Coincidentally, it was the first post that started off a "What are you reading at the moment?" thread on a football forum.

Miracle of Castell Di Sangro is a great read , but yes a true story, so not quite what you were after Dio?

However the Damned United is most certainly fiction (and has upset some of the main surviving characters greatly - mainly the Leeds players), and is definitely my favourite football book. It is very dialogue/monologue heavy and of course that must be completely made up. It is moving, inciteful and genuinely different.

Red or Dead by the same author is more of a slug, but emotionally quite rewarding, although you have to go through some heavily repetitive stuff to get there (deliberately repetitive, like Roberto Bolano in 2666, it is necessary, to the book, but hard to read).

Now how are the Beeb gonna reproduce French's wonderful lyrical passages (especially prevalent in "In the Woods), and also the way you get inside the head of one of the characters, and not just observe everyone as third party characters?? It's where books win every time.

Yes. I'm almost thinking I might not watch it.

I tried very hard with Peace's GB84 and failed miserably. It's completely put me off him.

GB84 isn't anywhere near as good and gets plain nasty. In fact the Red Riding trilogy was better as TV, but even then was grim.

I read the first GB book and sort of enjoyed it but gave up on the next one. I felt dirty and bored to be reading it. Fortunately I'd read and loved The Damned United first...
