I had a riding lesson at the weekend (‘the rules’ apparently allow 1-1 coaching. I know. I’m confused too, but I’m not arguing.) Managed to very briefly achieve something tiny but important - think like a Pilates-style activating a specific muscle. Now we just need to be able to do it all the time...

I love stuff like that, Maz. Can you explain? Or too complicated?

I’ll try and explain, but I’m not sure I’ll get it right. I’m sure someone else can correct me.
Essentially when you ride a horse you want him to create propulsion using his back end, engage the muscles under his belly and stretch over his back. If you watch horses doing dressage on TV that’s how they make the shape they do (although like with humans there’s ways to ‘cheat’ without properly engaging their muscles. It shouldn’t be forced and it takes a long time to get them strong enough.)
We’ve been working on this for aaaages...you have to work out how to ‘ask’ for it, they have to work out what you’re asking. My horse finds it much easier to hollow his back, stick his head in the air like a giraffe and run away, I’m not coordinated enough to do 4 things at once, and anticipate what to do next. But we did manage it at the weekend for about 30 seconds.
(When you see a really good combination doing this it looks effortless...it’s bloody not!)

I bet! I used to ride show ponies and Hacks (rode at HOYS and RIHS several times) but never advanced posh dressage

Thanks. Good answer - I understand enough for that to make sense. Completely fascinating. It's enough like me with my athletics for me to appreciate your dedication and to know how rewarding getting something 'right' - even for just a few seconds - is.
Bodies solving complicated jigsaws! Any two bits fitting together is progress.

Confused about how Maz is allowed one to one horse coaching when Ds2 is not allowed similar tennis fucking coaching from 20 metres across a net but whatever, it sounds cool. Actually I saw a big group of horses and riders out on Friday and was happy for them even though I had to walk in horse shit for the next few hundred yards
