I thought Donnie would go round via Glen Tanar to Mt Keen to maximise the use of the bike on roads or good tracks but he's pretty much going direct from Ballater. I guess he may be still on a mtb, it's difficult to tell on a climb at that angle?

No idea what that track is like, assumed he'd be going up Glen Tamar. Picture on FB of him leaving Ballatar on his drop handlebar gravel bike, so it must be pretty decent. FB post also said that the ankle swelling was down a bit this morning, which is good news

Day 9 today, 68/282 complete, 11 planned today Today's targets are the 2 at Glendoll and the Glenshee 9 ( he's already knocked off 6 of 11 ). Update on injury - "Yesterday was another day spent in the pain cave getting comfortable being uncomfortable!!" Tomorrow is his biggest day i think, with 80km and 5500m. Not even sure where he'll start from. From the order in his tracker list then doing An Socath first. So could cycle down to Braemar and round to Inverey tonight, then cycle down the length of Glen Ey tomorrow to Altanour Lodge. Or maybe more realistic for less cycling today, would be to start half way down the road to Braemar and cycle in the track up the side of the Baddoch burn - not been up that one ! |

He’s not hanging about today. The Glen Doll 2 are my local Munro’s as you’d suspect Gus. Interesting to see how he’s linked these between Lochnagar and Glenshee.

An update from Ally Beavan ( I think it was Thursday not Friday ) :- "I was on the hill with Donnie on Friday and the tendon wasn't too bad. He was moving really well actually. It's mostly getting aggravated by softer rough terrain, like he had in the day on the west Drummochter hills and Monadhliath. So I imagine the last couple of days have been really shit. He wasn't looking forward to today and tomorrow. Plenty rough ground and a lot of kilometres tomorrow but luckily it's one of the ones he can cut short without adding heaps to the next day. Rachael took his bike up to the Ptarmigan on Thursday afternoon so he at least didn't need to run down through the ski area. I'd assumed he'd free wheel down to Glenmore then ride out to Bynack Stables in the morning, but maybe going back over the shoulder of Cairngorm is just as quick. He's staying in the campervan every night, no bivvies like Spyke did. The thinking is it allows for higher quality recovery, and he's doing most of it on his own so getting kit carried in would be a faff." |

Day 10 today, 79/282 completed, 12 planned today Big day today with 80km and 5500m. 2 @ head of Glen Ey 3 @ Spittal of Glenshee 2 @ Geldie Lodge 1 @ Beinn Dearg 1 @ Glen Tilt 3 @ Beinn a'Ghlo A real diverse group with I'm guessing minimal (if any) paths between the various sets of 1's 2's and 3's. He set off up the Baddoch burn at 5am, currently on his way to 2nd of the day. |

Wow, day 10 is completely epic! Just a true monster. Not just the distance, but the trackless terrain that it's over. That lot took me five days at hiking pace, with a couple of nights camping out for the northerly ones. Signal lost an hour ago (9:50am) just as I was wondering if there might be a tactical bike waiting for Donnie at the Bynack Lodge ruins, to head up towards Geldie Lodge - it would fit for the team logistics quite well and be so much easier than the bog-hopping alternative route. An Sgarsoch is the only hil that I've been properly worried about lightning strike on - it's so smooth and when you're the only thing sticking up within miles, it's a bit worrying. And real too - a couple of days later someone in a village a few miles from me was killed on Ben Lui (?) by Tyndrum. Lots of lightning predicted for the next coupe of days. Wondering what the best route is between Carn a' Chlamain and Carn nan Gabhar Good track down to Forest Lodge and either just wade across the Tilt (that wouldn't have been possible last week!) or head upstream for two miles on the excellent track to the bridge at 956763? Again, I'd go for the easy track for both descent and to the bridge to minimise the off-piste running for the day. AND, there's a decent path heading all the way from the bridge to the summit - if you set the tracker map to 'aerial' view and zoom in you can see all of the zigs and zags of it. |

Now that I've had a good look at that (and the forecast) I'm half-tempted to head up the road (Blair Atholl is only just over an hour away) and up Glen Tilt to the bridge there and then back over the three Beinn a'Ghlo Munros this afternoon...
