NE - I've not done a 4000'ers round, so not done that descent. Steven Fallon's website is good for this sort of stuff, he has a "not recommended", and a "better" option stevenfallon.co.uk

NE - I've descended on the south side of the Allt Clach nan Tallear previously, curving south a bit in order to camp a little under a mile north of the Courrour bothy. That's the easiest line, although I remember it being heavy on the legs with a loaded pack. I'd use that for a 4000'ers round The Carn a' Mhaim ridge is a real favourite with its awesome views on both sides and if time wasn't an issue, I'd use the excellent path on the SE side of the summit, enjoying the extra couple of miles on great footpaths. Haven't tried the direct line used by DC yesterday. Looks like his support crew got a bike up pretty high towards Ben Avon, based on the spacing between the 11-minute dots on the tracker. P.S. The SE side of Cairngorm does make for an easy descent - I once ran from Bynack Mor over Cairnogorm (plus a Corbett to the east and some distant Munro top that had previously elduded me off to the west) and just remember it being great underfoot all the way. |

*Clach nan Taillear ... knew I'd lose a vowel somewhere there.

Nice early finish for him at Ballater (although guessing he will probably cycle a bit up Glen Tanar later), and he also had 30 mins at the van at Invercauld. He actually has plenty time to do Mt Keen if he wanted, you can cycle pretty far in, wouldn't take him long to nip up and down, but I guess as tomorrow is relatively short anyway, then just rest up and maybe get some physio on his problem lower leg. I think the next 3 days is where he makes up another day on Spyke who took 4 to get over to Blair Atholl |

I did Mt Keen one very snowy new year when staying in Ballater and even then we got as far as the bridge just east of the Shiel of Glentanar on the bikes before resorting to running.

"Well that was a probably the most painful 5 Munro’s I have ever done" That doesn't sound good with 26 days still to go ![]() |

57.5 Degrees of Pain
That doesn't sound good. Like most of us he must have had a share of youthful Munro disasters due to poor planning, kit, route finding or just a bad hangover!
