LOL. Ebay would be brilliant option to maximise the bang for my buck but I've been given a Halfords insurance voucher so I'm stuck with them. My fault really for pointing to the Bizango as being a broadly similar spec'd replacement. Whatever I get from them will probably be a small improvement on the bike that was stolen, though because I'd stuck a decent fork on that bike it was argubly a poor frame with a decent fork.

Frames are frames til you get to a certain point. I think I’d rather run rigid than cheap suspension fork now. All spoiled.

That's probably sound advice for someone slow on the trails like me, but there isn't much quality specc'd rigid bikes for sale in Halfords - i.e. rigid up front, but 1x10 / 11, decent weight, hydraulic brakes etc

A super lightweight £600 rigid would at least be worth considering for someone of my skills - sort of like this at 10.2kg but for adults evanscycles.com

I despise kids’ brakes with cheap heavy forks.

Indeed. We splashed the cash on one of those Hoy bikes for one of my brood who has a particular need for a lightweight bike, and I could convince him that no sus was better than cheap sus. It really was only 10.2kg too when we got it home, so for a 26inch hydraulic braked MTB I reckon it was pretty decent value. But I can see lots of Dads being persuaded to go for the one with "suspension and lots of gears"...

We've got (for our sins) a cheap 24 inch rockrider which I reckon weighs equivalent to a small tank. Fortunately the boy that rides that is less weight sensitive and just puts up with it. But I do wish I'd made a different choice when we got that one.

But nice bikes are expensive. That’s the trouble. And unless the customer appreciates that price will always win.

Agreed - it took me a few years of buying to realise that, coming from a background of £99 BSOs from ToysRUs and smiling wryly when I saw bike prices for branded ones which I just thought represented appalling value. I've changed my tune now, but equally cycling isn't high enough up my priorities to get me into "proper" buying. The bike I've just had nicked cost £350 and with various updates etc had a cash price of about £650. It lasted me 5 years, and if it hadn't been nicked would have lasted another 5 more probably, with bits and bobs of spend on it to maintain rather than improve it. So an annual cost of ownership of about £65-£80, that about represents what I'd expect to spend on cycling compared to other priorities. But there's always one step up in spec that you can take when buying new, and now I know a little more about the various hierarchies in terms of groupsets, forks, etc etc it's hard to find the right value sweetspot!

Depends what you want from a bike Larks

My single is 2nd hand and cost £225 it is most likely I will through £1000 at it just to make it more what I want. (brakes, seat post, seat, power meter)

My MTB race bike cost £5000 and I still spent another £800 upgrading it.
(power meter and seat post)

From my point of view both bring terrific value.

New builds really aren’t good value for money currently. Most of mine, no all of my bikes, have bits which have been on several other things. Latest build was new frame and fork and some new brakes. Everything else swapped over. But as I said before I’m spoiled now.
