Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

I read this interesting article today about the benefits of providing “universal basic mobility” as a means of unlocking more economic opportunities to people without requiring them to use (which usually means own) cars. For example jobs located on far out industrial estates which lock in a car reliant society

bloomberg.com

Not sure if this is a “bit of politics there” as Ben Elton would say

And just a reminder that the online shopping one day delivery habits people are hooked on are terrible for everyone

I think we acknowledge that this thread inevitably had "ooh, a little bit of politics" in it - in the nature of saving the environment. Needs governments as well as individuals to make huge changes.

In addition to universal mobility (shared or public transport) which I agree, there is also a point that "no travel" or "minimal travel" working could/should be a policy and culture shift. More "local hubs" that you can walk, cycle, short bus to, then use the technology to connect across the region, country, world.

But companies at the moment are *closing* local offices and consolidating in huge big locations, especially outside towns. Often these can only be easily accessed by car (nowhere near populations or public transport). Completely wrong. :-) G

The example in the article was someone working in retail - not everyone is a desk based worker.

We're back on solar and insulation (and possibly air source?), probably in that order. Solar survey and quotes tomorrow. Maybe a battery. The Smart Export Guarantee (replacement for FIT) is rubbish - 5p per kWh back to grid. Given that our new peak rate is 35p per kWh, it's almost worthless.

Probably be 7-8k for panels and another 3-4 if we go for a battery. A lot of cash. Hmmm. :-) G

Last weekend our local climate campaigning group had a meeting to discuss a renewable energy strategy for the town. Very early days but a few interesting ideas about potential for local generation (mostly wind/solar). Will be interesting to see if anything comes of it. There is certainly potential - ie local land and plenty of wind :-)

We are considering one. Of course it depends on location etc. And it was very much more along the lines of a wish-list than a business plan! But I could see the potential for a windmill adjacent to a solar farm somewhere on the edge of town.

One point is it really has to be quite big to make any economic sense apart from odd cases like off-grid sites, stand-alone installations. Not a domestic thing like solar can be.

About This Thread

Hi
I've seen environment (whether emissions, power, climate change, access to countryside, whatever you think of as "environment") discussed in various threads: Politics (obviously), the Electric Car thread fetcheveryone.com/forum/electric-car-anyone-61481/ , run free's excellent "Competitive Running and Keeping The Environment Clean" fetcheveryone.com/forum/running-competitively-keeping-our-environment-clean-60907/ my own Greta Thunberg thread fetcheveryone.com/forum/greta-thunberg---jfk-for-the-climate-generation-61044/ etc. but I haven't seen a general one.

So here it is. For those interested in the science, the politics, the action for (and I'll state that for me, this is mostly pro-environment, anti-emissions, anti-pollution etc.) and the hope for the future of our planet.
