Have seen lots a natural way to kill rats, is to put down baking soda laced with sugar. To deter rats use a strong smell. Google says:

"Rats have a powerful sense of smell. You can repel rats from your home and garden with scents they dislike, such as clover, garlic, onion, hot peppers containing capsaicin, house ammonia, used coffee grounds, peppermint, eucalyptus, predator (cat) scent, white vinegar, and citronella oil."

I believe rats don’t get water from their food whereas mice do, so they need water. But maybe that’s more use for killing them?

Anyway don’t get any - that I’ve seen - here despite being in a rural area. I reckon the jack Russell in the builders yard next door sees to them.

Our problem is we live close to a derelict chicken farm, which used to employ a professional rat killer 5 days a week. Chickens may have gone, but rats most certainly ain't.

NIBYISM still rules. Especially for Tory MPs.

Happy to whack coal fired power stations near Northern towns, but now the shoe is on the other foot, we can't possibly have wind and solar in rural areas....

(and the irony of the comment about solar should be on roofs from a govt that scrapped building regs that included new builds must be solar ready).

There is a link to Fozzys last post about energy transition which is this. I attended the SCDI annual lecture last night given by Louise Kingham CBE who is head of BP UK and used to be chair of the Energy Institute. (The talk was as much about Transition and renewables as it was oil and gas). She commented that from the discovery of oil in the North Sea to the date of first production was a gap of 5 years. In that time technology development for the first deep water / harsh environment production platform was equivalent to the technology jump needed to put a man on the moon.

To put up an offshore wind farm from concept to production can take up to 7 years but the process of installing a wind turbine is really short. A significant portion of the time process is take up with consents / approvals and dealing with the interest and rights of landowners for the bit of the project on land. The legal and operational aspect of the offshore bit is relatively easy. The answer to acceleration is as much about dismantling these legal hurdles.

Cycled past the Clyde wind farm. It is impressive and stark. Residents that we spoke with are okay with them but they don't want more of it around them - with a "we've got our fair share". It is windy around the area and apparently there are 2 more applications for wind farm developments that are being opposed. Residents who I spoke to as well stayed with do feel they should receive some sort of discount for having to put up with the sight.

Government completely missed the opportunity in the Energy Strategy paper to address climate change and fuel poverty. Nothing to address energy wastage by promoting home insulation, and removing gas boilers. Pretty much a backward step.

It should be possible to take the government to court to accuse if of gross negligence for opening new oil and gas production in the North Sea. Stop taking the stuff out of the ground. Don't start taking more of it. Grrr.

I agree HG. Nothing on demand reduction and everything very long term (don't get me wrong long term is good - but that should have been 15 years ago).

About This Thread

Hi
I've seen environment (whether emissions, power, climate change, access to countryside, whatever you think of as "environment") discussed in various threads: Politics (obviously), the Electric Car thread fetcheveryone.com/forum/electric-car-anyone-61481/ , run free's excellent "Competitive Running and Keeping The Environment Clean" fetcheveryone.com/forum/running-competitively-keeping-our-environment-clean-60907/ my own Greta Thunberg thread fetcheveryone.com/forum/greta-thunberg---jfk-for-the-climate-generation-61044/ etc. but I haven't seen a general one.

So here it is. For those interested in the science, the politics, the action for (and I'll state that for me, this is mostly pro-environment, anti-emissions, anti-pollution etc.) and the hope for the future of our planet.
