I posted this on the Politics thread, where the market driven electricity market and how "green" energy prices could go up, when clearly the cost of the wind, sun or tide that made the electricity doesn't change. "We chat about that on the Environment Thread um, yes, summary is we need to do more of *all* of the electricity generation and storage solutions AND all of the cutting down usage AND all of the other reductions in consumption, waste etc. All of it! ![]() |

A quick primer on solar panels. I need the roof to be oriented south to be worth the ROI basically? Assuming that I’ll be living in the property for the rest of my years. |

We have plans for solar on our house which are West / East facing sections. Don't think its needs to be south.

Ah that’s interesting. Just spotted a house in the village which has them on what looks to be a westward orientation

I believe South facing is the best. Variations after that would have less ROI but still would generate. Mine is South West, installed in 2009. When I was on a PAYG meter, I paid about 50 GBP for 5 months. Electricity company not happy with that and replaced my PAYG meter with a normal meter. I pay a lot in standing charges. Am looking for a battery solution and will move to Octopus I think |

Orientation is one of many considerations. It’s hard to know what to prioritise on a limited budget. I want this house to last me so let’s see

If you’re somewhere windy have you considered a domestic wind turbine + battery?

From a quick google the upfront cost would be too high, and I don’t think I’d be in that windy a location as I’m not upcountry

I am moving towards wind & solar combined with a fully off grid system i.e. linking the chapel too.
