Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Agreed! I spent some time researching this and bought my Skoda Fabia 1 lt petrol with great care for low impact in all ways, including at breakers yard point and longevity: it is going to last me at least 10 years. It is extremely frugal and pretty clean...

I cannot believe flying has less impact. I wonder how first class, business and economy differ too, as we are all on the same plane!

Likewise - if there are 2 or more people in the car (any car!) then it's obviously less Kg of carbon per Km per person....

The joys of dumbing down information, huh? As a diagram, it is lacking enough meaningful information to make a decision, without clicking through to the source data, which I can't really be bothered to do at the moment!

As an interesting challenge to Hanneke, is there anywhere locally you can arrange for a large plane to land just to pick up you, on your way to the West of England? ;-)

Until actual costs to individuals make sense, there's no real immediate (dis)incentive to change the way most of us travel, is there?

Marky, I have another option: Dutch amateur pilot with 2 small planes can fly me from just down the road here, to just down the road of my sisters, when he needs to make the hours and wants to fly to see his family. Actually really good value and as I will be halving his foot print ;)

Been hearing today of some NVDA in wealthy parts of London - letting down the tyres of SUVs which of course are massively polluting, unnecessary in cities, take up lots of space, and more likely to injure pedestrians and cyclists due to their design.

Sounds like the latest Extinction Rebellion wheeze. Well done them :-)

I never had a car in London. I only got a car when I moved to the middle of scenic nowhere. Before that, I lived in cities and in the Netherlands, the rail network is so reliable that a bike and the train suffised...

When I travelled up to COP26 and met youth.... all that I spoke to want to learn to drive and expect a car....

I have concerns swapping from ff cars to electric cars will not help the situation. The cars will bear a huge carbon costs in their development and transportation to countries. Additionally the other side to this is people who are unfit due to lack of activity and prone to more disease?

Quite!
I have always cycled everywhere so, when I sustained and ankle injury that made running fairly painful for me, I started cycling in stead, just to be out there. I was quickly scouted by a local cycling club and propelled into racing... I was 44! Everyone surprised how I could come out if "nowhere" yet, I wasn't: I cycled at least 20 kms a day, more or less every day, from the age of 9... I am sure it explains my fitness levels.

Cycling has always been transport, not sport...

About This Thread

Hi
I've seen environment (whether emissions, power, climate change, access to countryside, whatever you think of as "environment") discussed in various threads: Politics (obviously), the Electric Car thread fetcheveryone.com/forum/electric-car-anyone-61481/ , run free's excellent "Competitive Running and Keeping The Environment Clean" fetcheveryone.com/forum/running-competitively-keeping-our-environment-clean-60907/ my own Greta Thunberg thread fetcheveryone.com/forum/greta-thunberg---jfk-for-the-climate-generation-61044/ etc. but I haven't seen a general one.

So here it is. For those interested in the science, the politics, the action for (and I'll state that for me, this is mostly pro-environment, anti-emissions, anti-pollution etc.) and the hope for the future of our planet.
