Daughter has suddenly decided she'd like to explore going to university this year instead of having a year out. She hadn't applied at all but apparently you can still go through clearing (i.e. apply now). What I am trying to get my head around is how we fund this! I have literally no idea how much a parent might be expected to contribute (though of course I guess it depends on where she goes and how much accommodation is). She gets her IB results on Saturday. If they're disappointing the idea might go away again in favour of retaking, but I'm not honestly expecting that to happen. I'd got used to the idea of her being at home for another year but maybe we'll be empty nesters sooner than I anticipated. |

Yes, clearing opens on Friday I think. And she will be at an advantage because she has her results already. We gave SS £150 a month when she was at university (she went in 2017 and did 4 years). Her mother gave the same. She worked during the vacations but not termtime. My sister pays my nephew's rent but I don't think she gives him anything else. Not sure. He has a job in a coffee shop. Obviously both took the max tuition fee loan. |

We paid for accommodation and bought shopping when we were visiting. Luckily no tuition fees here but student loans required just to live.

My kids only got minimum loan and it barely covered accommodation. I was relatively generous with money so they didn’t have to work in term time and could concentrate on studies, and I’ve paid off overdrafts a couple of times, but I’m lucky that I can enable that and preferred they didn’t get more debt than essential. I think there are plenty of students who get full loans who don’t get any parental help so have to work. |

Just the minimum maintenance loan here as well. We've said we'll pay for accommodation and see how far he gets on the maintenance loan and what he's earned (and not already spent!) this year.

We pay rent and phone contract, and will do the same for Marigold. SweetPea lives off minimum maintenance loan and anything she can earn. She covers house bills, food, travel and fun with this. The full loan would barely cover her rent - affordability varies hugely.
