Cyclops
When the alert is triggered, you contact DfE, who, based on experience so far, tell you just to carry on as normal. Then you try to teach all the children at home and the ones in school at the same time.

Oh no Cyclops, that's so irresponsible. I hope they all recover fully and don't pass it on to anyone vulnerable.

Basically, we don't even have to do a deep clean if we've had positive cases. Nothing happens, all we get is the line "no action need be taken." Perhaps not cramming 45 children together on a coach would help them not spread it to each other...? Although our cases are mostly in the same class, the ones from the other class that have caught it are all the ones doing the shared swimming lessons (and therefore coach journeys).

We were advised (5 cases in a tutor group of 23) to make sure we keep cleaning. We're in Devon so back in masks until the end of this month.

Kids are getting 'pinged' and the advice to them is that it is 'recommended' that they get a PCR and come into school like normal unless they have symptoms.

Cases are rising steadily and daily

Our students are already confused by our mish mash of a timetable of online only, face-to-face and online, face-to-face lectures and seminars. I think quite a lot want to stay home and stream, so the hard line on no remote learning is probably going to hit us (after a remarkable improvement in NSS this year).

By some miracle we went up a tiny amount on NSS (I suspect because all those who had previously refused to record lectures etc were made to), which in comparison to all the other unis made us look fantastic, so we shot up ~60 places in one of the league tables.

We even got a £500 bonus, which of course is nothing compared to the extra hours we did, but at least was better than the usual "the university didn't meet its targets, so you get no bonus" or "here's a partial bonus of £100" which barely makes a dent once the tax, NI and pension has come out of it.

I didn't know bonuses were even a thing.

Well, they've toyed with them for years. I think this year they've lost enough people that they felt they had to do something "drastic" to try to keep people. Our department has lost maybe 5 people in the last year, which is more than in the last 5 years put together I think. Others have also indicated they're taking retirement (long after normal retirement age), so I think they might have been quite desperate. There's also the threat of strikes because of the USS pension debacle.

About This Thread

There are enough educators on here that I thought it might be nice to have somewhere supportive to rant and problem solve.

Everyone is welcome.
