Hi ,
It looks like you're using an ad blocker.

The revenue generated from the adverts on the site is a critical part of our funding - and it's because of these ads that I can offer the site for free. But using the site for free AND blocking the ads doesn't feel like a great thing to do, which is why this box is so large and inconvenient. Some sites will completely block your access, but I'm not doing that - I'm appealing to your good nature instead. Did you know that you can allow ads for specific sites, whilst still blocking them on others?

Thanks,
Ian Williams aka Fetch

Makes sense. Whereas in Humanities they are glad to see the back of us. Our enrolments are half what they are usually. They are lower than in Jan when everything was online :(

We haven't got as many students as we'd like in my area, but we're one of the "lucky" universities that benefitted from the higher grades, so we could accept more students overall. It's very patchy though and is obviously dire for the departments/universities that can't over-recruit. I heard at least one university is essentially contracting out their academic staff to other universities because they don't have enough students to teach.

We seem to have gone the other way (Open University) - really good NSS performance, oversubscribed, so there's been a shortage of tutors. It'll be interesting to see if this all drops off again once face-to-face is back on. We obviously benefitted from being set up to deliver distance learning. We've got improved contracts (which has been in the pipeline for years, rather than being a Covid thing) and we do quite regularly get a little bonus here and there. There are a few issues here and there, but I think overall I'm pretty lucky with my deal. The only downside is it can be a bit isolated (lots of online communication, but very little face to face) although that doesn't particularly bother me.

When I applied to work at OU it looked like a really good setup, and I can see the attraction of a uni that is set up for distance learning for staff and students alike.

Once we've paid off the mortgage I might look into it again.

After last year I cannot bear distance learning. Or any kind of online meetings.

It's so interesting how different people have got on with WFH/distance learning. I'm happy as long as it's one or the other, the mixture we did last year, and will be doing this year, I find harder than 100% online or in person.

Although, I'm finding myself getting a bit miffed with people who impose in-person meetings without asking if that works for everyone. There's an accessibility issue for me though, online there's a lot less talking over each other, I can lipread whoever has their camera on, Teams provides autocaptions. I guess it will take a while to work out the happy medium.

That's a good reminder for me. Thank you.

I will be working most of today, even though the thought makes me cry. I have done no prep for teaching this week and loads of the students have emailed in with timetabling issues.

Linds I only have around 35 tutorials a year, and a lot of them are (a) duplicates (b) done with another tutor and (c) have lots of material shared from colleagues so the prep is easily manageable. I certainly wouldn't want to do the kind of volumes that traditional universities were doing. I honestly don't know how you managed it.

A tutorial being an online seminar type thingy, can be anything from 1 to 30 students, but is usually between 5 and 15.
