To complete the set of usual suspects, here I am......it’s fair to say I have a bit of an issue with this particular target.

I have had 4 proper cracks at this over the last 12 months resulting in 86:12, 85:12, 97:xx (yep!), 85:20 (yesterday). In fact, my PB is 85:09 set at Wokingham in horrid conditions when I wasn’t sure what to expect at all. Perhaps there’s something there already. It was after this run I went to my next HM fully (over-) confident, went off too fast, blew up and ran the 85:12. BR was on the line with me that day. Yesterday’s effort was an attempt at a more conservative approach that also went wrong.

So, what to do about it? I have options on Wokee, Fleet, and Reading in Feb, Mar, Apr next year, respectively, and time in between to get in to shape. But what to do? More miles; more tempo miles; faster intervals; slower intervals; more hills; more sleeping? I’m a tad confused and very willing to pick up tips guys. Help!!

Earlier this year I did a full Jack Daniels HM specific plan. This included tempo miles every week and by the end of it I was running 6 miles at sub 6:20 min/mile pace fairly comfortably. This was a hard and very specific schedule but did give me the confidence. I’m tempted to go back to this plan again.

What are your own key sessions? Would love to hear about them.

My best HMs either came as prep for a full marathon (3-5 weeks out) or in the 3 weeks afterwards. Any half run outwith this period has been mediocre at best.....with one exception which was a PB (one of my 1:26s) where I went in with low expectations due to inconsistent training and somehow ran a stormer, overatking and beating Loulou which isnt something I expect to ever happen again !

The one half I trained specifically for was a disaster and I ended up lucky to break 90 mins

Thinking I'll have to join up with this. By the time I get back into running after my calf is sorted I reckon I'll be hard pushed to build up enough miles for a strong spring marathon and I reckon in order to get much faster over marathon distance I'll have to go sub 85. Assuming I can sort the calf out my (ambitious) target would be sub 85 at Eastbourne in March.

Marathon training. That's been the key for my two sub 85 HM's this year in Bath and Cardiff. You have the stamina with your lsr's and a decent amount of speed work is vitally important. 5-6 mile tempo runs at race pace was the session that gave me real confidence in knowing I could go under 85 minutes.

Bizarrley my 1:26:25 which is my 2nd best time came off shagged legs in full on Mara trg about 7 weeks out.... and is probably my best performance this year, and that was after a very conservitive start... so I know there is more to come.....

WW It will come and I would look at your trag you did for the 85:09 and replicate that but with a few seconds faster on your effort sessions, or do some shorter faster sessions - just a thought...

Nice to see some familur faces here.....:-)

WW, been reading up on the Hadd approach alot lately and I intend to start Hadd training next week; do you think youncould benefit from it? Purely speculating but it is a different approach to that which you have so far tried? My best HM times have come in advance of a target marathon.

I'd like to join here, although my PB set this weekend is only 89:23 so I'll be keeping Smout company for a while, I imagine :)

My 4-minute PB came off the back of Hal Higdon's 12-week Advanced HM plan, which I really enjoyed as a programme. Will be adjusting my target paces accordingly and using Higdon's Marathon plan in the New Year ahead of Halstead, and see what I can do at Silverstone.

I'm a way off you guys yet but for my two pennith. My last half Pb also came off the back of marathon training, about 4 weeks before. I felt totally in control and completely comfortable. I know I'll get close to 90 next time out now.
