DJW - I only run quite high milage because i'm normally in marathon training most of the year and function better when i'm knocking out 65-75m wks.. At the moment i'm only running around half that and my general fitness is suffering hence the reason i could'nt chase a time at GNR. After 5days off i decided to start running again on friday with a progressive 7m and followed it up with 19 yesterday in which my lack of fitness come to light. Not only did i struggle in the later miles i cut the run short from 20m and had to walk a little from 18.25...I'll need to get the finger out!!!
10k for me next week where i don't expect very much but you never know!

Looks like my kinda thread.
I think I need to do some serious reps for this though. Currently churning out 60-70 mile weeks.
Anyone got any experience of the best benefits between hill reps and mile reps with a view to adding speed? i.e. which is better?

Pleased to get a more convincing sub 80 time. In a total reversal of Pewsey a month ago, I felt stronger as the race continued and despite the course finished like a train. Really looking forward to Cardiff now.
I found 80 a tough nut to crack. I ran 82 dead at Bath before running 80 (to the second again) there a year later. To my mind breaking the 80 is as large a landmark as going sub 3 for the marathon. Go under those times and you sound far more impressive talking about it afterwards!

as if I did nt want to bad enough Miser and you go onto say that! Ive got a 10k this weekend and just having some varied training up to Cardiff, intervals, long runs, tempo just doing a bit. If I am honest not looking to get alot of my GNR time. Winter Marathon training and looking for that Sub 80 in Bath.
Hill reps I think for strength Mile reps for speed? correct me someone if Im wrong.

Yes DJ sounds about right, Intervals it is then. Once a week should do it.
I am looking at Watford or Berkhamsted halfs in Feb/March 2013. However might look at a flater one if no joy as both are quite hilly.
Not tried Bath, is it quite flat then?

Miser, going by WAVA, surely a sub-80 half is more challenging than a sub 3:00 full?!
I have Oxford in a couple of weeks. Weather permitting I'm going for a PB (sub 1:23:49). That time was set this spring, with a sniffle and eight hours of jet lag in me. This autumn, the mileage and speeds have been higher - so quite optimistic. However, my target would be a WAVA PB, and sub-80 a large step (I believe).
Like Cheeky, I'm interested in people's opinions on hill vs fast flat intervals. Personally, I find I feel stronger after hills and have better form. But in the end isn't it as simple as whether you are running a hilly course or not in your target race.

Could'nt say for sure if it's right but i'd tend to favour doing hills to build strength in the early stages of a training schedule and leave the flat speedwork closer to the goal race. I tend to do both at my club over the 2sessions i do - tues is hilly reps which will now be on xc for the winter and do a thurs track session which normally consists of anything from 200's to 1200's!! I personally believe that you need both..

Have to say from my own experience that I have broken 3 hours a lot more easily than I have broken 80 and I ran them both at similar fitness levels.
Also I'm with Stoosh, track intervals Tuesday and XC/Hills Saturday for me.
I'm not sure I think there is a huge difference in terms of helping you achieve sub 80 though. Unless you are at your peak (ie trained for 6/7+ years consistently, have stopped improving) then its just a case of trying to get fitter generally. Its a balancing act between 1) staying healthy, 2) slow mileage and 3) quality sessions (hills, reps, tempo). Do as much of 2 and 3 as you can fit around life without losing 1, and do them consistently.

Stoosh, that makes a lot of sense to me, also I'm currently looking at some training plans to work to for my first marathon and both start with hill reps and end with speed work,just what your saying really.
Can't comment on sub 80 v's sub 3hrs as not run a marathon, but guys I respect at the club tend to say its a buggy, harder than it seems. Sub 80 is totally my target.
Bath is flat,not as a pancake, but flat ish. A kinda two lap race, but I just have a soft spot for it as I love Bath and it was my first half. Running it in October but I'm told Cardiff is very flat,shall report back.
